Do you review a place if it's just meh?

I'm not talking about BAD food or BAD service cause in that case I'd be inclined to do a writeup. But when it's just okay and there are plenty of places better. We had just this situation yesterday. We're "on a mission" to try out new-to-us places. We have several favorite Mexican places but went to this one to try it out. The food was fine. Not any better than fine. The Margaritas were fine and not any better than fine. It's an attractive place and the service was great. They've been in business for about 50 years so nothing I'm going to say is going to really hurt them but still.... But what's the point? We're not particularly hard to please so I'm quick to write up those spots. I'm not going to post about it but wonder what others attitudes are?

  1. I agree. I really only mention a place if it stands out, either in a good way or a bad way. If it's just meh, I'm not going to slam them but I won't recommend them either.

    1. No, but if someone posts asking about it, I'll answer.

Good point. Yeah, I'd do that also.

      2. If I only review places that are REALLY good or REALLY bad, then how will anyone know I am not a sensationalist?

Yeah, I get that. But recently we ate at another new-to-us Mexican place and I reviewed it. We really liked it but I mentioned two other places that we like more. The difference is that the earlier one I had really positive things to say and this most recent one, not really. I'm kinda thinking out loud :)

        2. it think it is fair to discuss it when it is new or when there has been a change in personnel, such as a new chef, new owner etc. The goal of chowhound is hopefully to steer people toward good and interesting. And also my meh may be your superlative and vice versa.
