L.A. Chowhound driving the 10 looking for BBQ & Chicken-Fried-Steak
Please Help. On Friday morning my wife and I will be driving from Houston to El Paso on the 10 heading back to Calif. We have been told that we cannot say we have been to Texas unless we have had Texas Bar-B-Q and Chicken-Fried-Steak. Please advise as to what stops on the 10 are a must Thank you for your help and we look forward to your tour.

The best barbecue in all of Texas is at City Market in Luling, just off I10. Get some sausage, and ask for brisket with some fat on it. You will be getting the best examples of those in the state. The pork ribs are good, all right, but not exceptional. Get crackers (rather than bread), whole sour pickles, and raw onion. Forego the sides (beans, potato salad, etc.) and the sauce. The barbecue is so good it don't need no sauce. Get whatever you want to drink, just please don't get light beer or diet soda water. You will have before you the apotheosis of Texas barbecue. Enjoy.

Looking at Mapquest, this looks like it's a ways off I10. Anything closer to I10?

Unfortunately, most of the drive on I-10 is through pretty empty wilderness.

Its not very far off of I10 at all, at the most maybe 10 minutes.

Luling is "a ways of I-10"? It's a mile and a half off I-10. See the map below.
I'm not as high on City Market as some; but it's definitely good barbecue, well worth a stop for any food-lover traveling down I-10. (And with Lockhart just fifteen minutes off I-10, that's another major temptation.)

Thanks Jim, since your post I have been reading about City Market. Map Quest from Houston shows the Luling store less than 5 miles off the I10. The Luling store opens at 7:00am. Now that is being serious about Bar-B-Q. I also found a store in Houston. Is that the same quality?

That place in Houston in unrelated to the real place in Luling.

The mission was to drive a car along the I10 from Texas to deliver to a relative in California. At the last minute I was unable to go but my son (Mike) took my place and he and my daughter-in-law (Steff) took all the notes from you Chowhounds. At 7:15 am on Friday they were parked in Luling. Mike said all he saw was no people, a railroad track, watermelon in every direction and City Market. The front door had a big sign CLOSED. So he went inside to learn City Market was OPEN. He went to the back room (smoke room) and was told the ribs were not ready yet but would be ready soon. That was no matter because he wanted the brisket and sausage that was so talked about. They cut his brisket and placed it on the paper. He said the order was to go so they added another paper wrap and he was on his way. Mike said eating City Market while driving the I10 makes for lot better drive. No sauce was needed but being from California that was a big departure from expecting / wanting sauce. Still, the brisket was so good that when Mike returned to L.A. on Sunday all he talked about was planning a food trip back to Texas. The sausage was very different from the links we eat here. Mike said the sausage would fall apart if he laid it down on the side. Links are solid. Still, Mike said he liked the sausage and wants to return to City Market for more brisket and sausage. I think four of us will take the return trip maybe in December. Mike asked me to write a Thanks to you all first for the offer of what to eat and second for being so demanding of what good food should be like that the end result is, Texas Style Barbeque. My thanks as well because now we are planning a family trip all together for a week of good eating at the places mentioned that I did not get try. Now that is what life is about. Bert

Chicken Fried Steak stop...
I've only been here 2 weeks now and while biking through several areas came across the town of Comfort just off the 10. In this town, they have a place called Double D's - rest., bakery and bar interesting combo but I digress.
They have excellent chicken fried steak - the rest of the menu seems pretty good too but when asked, they claimed this was their specialty.
When it arrived - lightly fried not real hard and crunchy, the waiter puts in front of me a plate about 18 inches or so it seemed in length and about 8-10 inches across. I couldn't see the plate very well due to the size of the fried steak on it.
NOTE: There was NOTHING but steak on that plate. To further entice, he called it the "childs portion".
YUM YUM....I'll be back before I leave this area.
