2013, the year I may have lost my love for Thanksgiving foods...

My favorite food holiday since forever. Have made 30+ full blown turkey meals in my lifetime. Enjoy it SO much that I cook another entire meal even though I've been a guest of my son, and DIL for the past 6 years. This year's celebratory meal was as usual, a potluck affair of family past, present, ex's, and current spouses. Everyone brought a great looking dish to share. It was a beautiful affair full of cheer. Six hours later I was sick to my stomach for the first of eight times. Fast forward to today, Saturday. Time for my home-cooked turkey meal and I can't stomach more than one bite. Am afraid that tomorrows turkey soup will be a waste of time, and ingredients too. Sad...

  1. I'm feeling similar. Used to love it and eat it for days, now 2 days is enough for me. The rest that could be frozen has been except turkey since I do enjoy that and have been using it in regular meals like eggs and sandwiches but the leftover sides will either be eaten by SO or meet the trash can tomorrow. I just think I'm getting old :) I love the actual day and the family but I've learned there are so many terrific dishes in the world to cook that after I'm ready to get back to normal and meet the food again in a year rather than everyday for a straight week. I already told myself I'm doing less next year.

      This is uncanny but I had the same feeling today, fldhkybnva. We had turkey soup tonight but still have a ton of leftovers. I'm sick of eating and cooking turkey + sides! I'm definitely scaling back next year.

      Part of my problem is that all our family and friends can't make it on the same day, some cannot come here or cook for health reasons, so I end up cooking multiple Thanksgiving meals (4 this year, 1 was transported 150 miles from my house). I hate to disappoint people when they have a favorite dish, but next year, I'm just going to find a way to simplify, somehow! I cannot keep making three types of stuffing/dressing, three types of cranberries, etc. for each meal, it's too much.

      I was thinking of posting the dates, times, and menus on the online family calendar, and telling folks that if it's not on the menu and they want it, to feel free to bring it themselves.

        I agree, I'm scaling back next year. I actually really enjoy the turkey and love having it around but prefer to put it in my eggs and usual meals rather than eat it over and over in Thanksgiving style. However, with the leftover sides I keep tyring think of ways to re-purpose and so I end up eating Thanksgiving over and over when really all I want leftover is turkey. I have to stop myself from looking up ways to "use leftover turkey from Thanksgiving" and realize that it's no different than any other day during the year when we have turkey all the time. Pondering leftover ideas can be as stressful as figuring out the actual meal and it shouldn't be, just take your leftover turkey and return to the normal flow :)

          Turkey is popular in our house year round. I cook a turkey about once per month, just to have meat for sandwiches, casseroles, salads, etc. I buy a 13-14 lb. turkey, sprinkle with salt and pepper and smoosh it into my 6 qt. slow cooker (no liquid added). Then I stick a temperature probe in the breast, set it for 155F. Take it out and let it rest for 30 min. (the temp will go up to 160F or slightly above). Bingo, you've got a whole turkey perfectly cooked for lots of uses with no fuss. It's much cheaper (and better) than buying that crap formed turkey meat product in the deli @ $6.99/lb or more . . . our market does sell turkey parts but the price per pound is crazy. Much cheaper to buy the whole bird.

            You know, that's a great idea. I go out of my way to buy not only turkey breasts at Trader Joe's. We also primarily use turkey deli meat but I don't buy the "crap formed turkey meat product," I insist on driving to Wegmans for the real turkey no salt added sliced off a roast turkey for probably $9/lb and could just cook an entire turkey for much cheaper to use throughout the year. I think next year I'll cut back on sides and make another turkey, I love that bird.

              We don't have Wegman's here, unfortunately. So it's "crap formed turkey meat product" or cook your own. There is a place where you can buy turkey breast cutlets, but they are $8.99/lb. and nothing special (not antibiotic-free or anything) and you still have to cook them. So I just buy a whole bird (usually around $1.19/lb when not holiday season). This month, I'll buy at least 6 on sale and throw them in the chest freezer, so we're good for awhile. (And think of all the bonus *free* turkey stock . . . LOL)

                Great point. I don't have a chest freezer because my hoarding spirit would fill it up in a day, but I'm sure I can order them throughout the year. The turkey stock is on the stove at a nice rolling boil to reduce for a bowl of noodle soup.

              MrsP, thanks for this! I have bought turkeys before in the "off season" mostly for sandwiches, but I never thought of just throwing them in the crockpot. Now that you have told me, of course, this is OBVIOUSLY the best way to get the good cheap turkey meat. Brilliant!

                Just don't add any liquid and be sure to use a meat thermometer so breast meat does not get overdone. Sometimes you have to smash the breastbone to make it fit. The good news is that the dark meat is closest to the heat, while breast is in the middle/top where the temp is not quite as high. So it ends up cooking evenly. I have a Hamilton Beach slow cooker with built in meat probe but any probe thermometer will work. Happy cooking!

                Every year at Thanksgiving, I usually buy multiple turkeys to keep for year round cooking since they are so cheap. I like to make turkey bbq on the grill. When I'm feeling like having turkey, I'll cut one in half so we'll have enough for a couple of meals and soup. Last year, I bought 7. This year I didn't buy any but I have one left from last year. We didn't make turkey this year since we had dinner at someone else's house but I am going to pull that bird out next month to put on the grill. Much cheaper than buying deli meat.

        2. Letsindulge, did you get food poisoning from meal #1? If so, please take good care of yourself and seek medical care if you're not over it soon! Good luck and I hope you feel better - perhaps a simple broth in lieu of a hearty soup will be soothing . . . take care, MrsP

            I can't say for sure that it was food poisoning since I've not heard that anyone else had become ill. However my husband, with the delicate stomach was completely fine. My daughter as well.

              Several of my friend's family members are having the same symptoms as you, but they are saying it's the flu, brought in by baby granddaughter from out of state. Some got shots last month, so luckily not everyone got sick. But half the family did, sad way to spend their time together.

              They are from North Dakota/Mpls if it makes a difference. I don't know anyone here in NY that's come down with it yet. Yet!

          2. We definitely don't make enough for days worth of eating. This year I had maybe a pint of white and a pint of dark meat, a small serving of roasted potatoes, a little less than a cup of gravy, two cups of sautéed green beans, two servings of mashed rutabaga, a serving of corn casserole, a whole jar of homemade cranberry sauce, and a cup of stuffing. So happy all the mashed potatoes were gone because I hate them leftover. Made beautiful stock from the carcass. So far we had one late night snack of leftovers and will probably use te rest up for dinner today or lunch tomorrow.

              Wow, I'm jealous - sounds like you prepared the perfect amount of food, melpy! *hand clapping vigorously*

              It was especially hard for me to plan the Thursday meal, because there were 5 people who could not say whether they would attend until the day of - this due to medical conditions of certain elderly family members + in one instance, an overdue baby! LOL.

                I had 6 up in the air when i went grocery shopping and my friends who brought food for salad making and green beans WAY over bought. I had to toss some of it last night due to mold. Very sad. I hate wasting but I just can't use it all up fast enough.

                I desperately need to learn how to "put up" food.

            2. Mrs. Potato and I are pretty lucky in this department. It is just her and I (which may be changing soon, our three grandchildren may be coming to live with us) and we always go to her family's get together at either her dad's house or her aunt's. We eat our fill (which, admittedly, is less than it used to be) and MAYBE go home with a few leftovers that last us a couple of meals, then we're done. We don't have to worry about turkey burnout.

              1. Aside from a few slices of breast meat for my husband, I will be sending all of the leftovers home with my daughter for her housemates to enjoy. They are totally unappetizing to me after getting violently ill multiple times after Thanksgiving dinner. On a strange note, I didn't partake of the pumpkin pie that was offered at the celebratory dinner, so I was able to enjoy a sliver of the one I made for my home-cooked meal. In the wise words of my daughter she says that by next year I'll be ready for a turkey meal again. Don't know about that.....
