Day 2: Whole Foods and Peche get rave reviews!
Started our day with bland hotel fare followed by a blustery walk to Poydras to catch the St. Charles Streetcar. DD picks us up and we wound our way to Whole Foods (Magazine) where we, luckily, found a good parking spot.
Even Whole Foods has typical New Orleans hospitality: the staff were super friendly and the management knowledgeable. Many WF workers were available to answer my queries on Tuesday before T-day -- and they were in great spirits. At home in Santa Rosa, going to WF is a chore to be avoided; smaller footprint store and everyone is pretty blasé. We got everything we needed, including coffee and a very light take home lunch, and headed back to DD’s to ready her home for T-day.
As mentioned in my other report, we made an impromptu invitation to our dining neighbors, H & D, during dinner at Sylvain. They met us at a couple minutes before 7 pm. While waiting DD and B had already ordered some yummy cocktails at the bar (Satsumo, Third Ward Zombie), and soon Peche's hostess brought us back to a nice round table near the oyster bar.
Even *before* I had my dark/stormy style cocktail ordered, chowhound friend Sir Sanglier, secretly sends over TWO orders of the famed tuna dip, and, giggling, we find each other at the oyster bar! So very fun to finally meet a NOLA chowhounder, and his companion. By our second night in town we have: 1) met new foodie friends from Wisconsin and d) rendez-voused with a NOLA native who has consistently welcomed my to this board -- and this great City! Plus, I got introduced to Herbsaint’s lovely chef. The NOLA serendipity just keeps on coming!
Peche: everything from start to finish was high quality, hearty portions and nicely presented with enthusiasm by two fun and friendly staffers. We had the divine tuna dip, grilled eggplant, 18 plump and fresh oysters, the whole snapper -- surrounded by lots of vegetable goodies, most memorable the pickled cauliflower. Standouts of the meal were the fresh oysters and the flourless chocolate cake, paired with port. During dinner we had a very nice Pinot Noir, but once again I did not see Sonoma County selections on the drink menu. Apparently, I have some work to do.
My D. Link fine dining re-cap: I like Peche better than Cochon. The layout/ambiance seems much warmer, and the food presentation more balanced than its porky cousin – I would go back to Peche in a heartbeat!. I still hold Herbsaint very dear to my heart for a superb choice in CBD.
