Burgers in downtown TO

Looking for a good burger joint OR place that serves a hearty and tasty burger. I like Five Guys, looking to try something different like Burgers Priest? When you have a burger craving which pub, resto or burger joint is your go to?

  1. You are in luck as Burger Priest just opened a Queen/Spadina branch! :)

People in the core seem to like Big Smoke (multiple locations) and the Works. I'm not a huge fan of either of them. GBK is hit and miss, sometimes amazing, sometimes really bad.

Depending on where you are downtown, just for with Burger Priest and you'll be happy every time

    1. The Priest is quite similar to 5 Guys but simply better. At least, in the burger department.
5 G has them beat on fries.

Disagree re: fries. BP fries are probably my fav in the city.

        1. re: justxpete

          Of course you do ;-)

I'm not a shoestring fry guy. So they're up against it from the git go.

      2. If you're looking for the Five Guys / Burger's Priest style of burger, Holy Chuck, The Stockyards, and Stack are all good choices as well.

But none are downtown. The closest would be HC at Yonge and St. Clair.

True enough. I'm coming from Mississauga, so it all feels like downtown to me. :)

        2. Best burger i have found downtown is at the bay-adelaide centre at manhattan's burgers.

Wow, never heard of that place! Though the fact that they boast on their website that other burger joints use up to 30% fatty beef and they use "100% lean ground beef" makes me want to hate them right from the get-go. Another dry patty sucking all the moisture out of my mouth? No thanks.

          2. Posted in about in a seperate thread but just a heads up that P&L Burger joint is suppose to open on Wednesday just down the street from Burger Priest's Queen/Spadina location.

            1. P&L Burger, 507 Queen St. W just opened this week near the new Burger Priest Location near Queen & Spadina is in my opinion the best burger in the city hands down. If you like burgers this your crack.

Agreed. May even be better than Squirrel was - not sure after just one go.

                1. re: justsayn

did yall never try the burger at the restaurant before?

it's a good burger, the one i had yesterday wasn't as good as the last one i had at the restaurant a couple weeks ago, but i definitely chalk that up to soft opening and serving like hundreds of burgers in a few hours.

it's definitely not as god as burger's priest but hey

                    1. re: petek

                      ha good one.

                    2. re: disgusti

The one I had a few months ago at P&L carried a hefty price tag and I wasn't so crazy about the toppings. The bun was different I believe. For 9 bucks this Italian burger is a steal and the fries are great too. WAY, way better than BP.

                      1. re: justsayn

                        Blasphemy.

                        1. re: justxpete

Well you better try it first because you may be converted. The Priest has been getting away with murder!

                          1. re: justsayn

Had one a few minutes ago (seriously). It was delicious. Different style, though.

Both will be competing for my burger affections, however. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It has a little more 'umph' than BP - different bun (which are great, btw), etc. But definitely a different style of burger - it's definitely not a "Classic American Cheeseburger", which is what BP is. So it's like comparing a striploin to a ribeye. You decide which is which.

Fries were great too, but most of mine were a bit under-cooked. I'm sure it's just opening week kinks.

                              White Castle vs Umami.

                              1. re: justsayn

White castle is garbage. That isn't a valid comparison.

                                  Cult vs Discernment

                                    lol, whatever.

                                    This:

                                    Does not compare to:

                                    http://kimle.files.wordpress.com/2010...

But this explains why you prefer Harbor Shitty over Jacob's & Co. - you really can't tell the difference!

                                    1. re: justxpete

You are misquoting me here. The H60 rib steak KILLS the equally priced rib steak at JCo. JUST KILLS IT!

JCo KILLS H60 in the premium cuts area but you pay through the nose for it.

Time will tell. I put all my money on P&L if they can keep it up at the $9.00 price tag. They make The Priest look like...well that's too easy.

                                      1. re: justsayn

hahaha. It isn't even close. Not by anyone's imagination other than yours.

                                        1. re: justxpete

I hear ya! We can check back in the new year on this one.

                                          1. re: justsayn

I'm talking about H60 vs Jacobs & co. BP vs P&L is much much closer.

                                            H60 doesn't hold a candle to J & C by any measure.

                                            1. re: justxpete

I would do a blind taste test with you but I know you will pick the tasteless, dried out, rib steak from JCo just to win.

                            2. re: justsayn

i dunno man it's a good burger but it just doesn't stack up with THE BEST whereas burger priest at its finest is, frankly, probably the best hamburger ive ever eaten

                              1. re: disgusti

You need to try it first....at P&L, not the resto.

                                1. re: justsayn

                                  i did

                                  1. re: disgusti

Never had a sublime burger at BP. 5 Guys near Sherway (only) puts out a stellar American classic.

                                  2. re: disgusti

                                    Different style burgers, come on.

Let's simply speak about the basic single American burger at Priest, not the trumped up BS burgers they put out.

I prefer the bigger, thicker more substantial burger patty at P&L. It is crazy juicy (not all greasy) and the beefy taste is unobstructed. P&L has at least half the greasy feel! Huge consideration for me. The real cheddar Is way, way, way better than the terribly salty Priest version of American cheese. 5 Guys has a more complimentary American cheese to the burger than the Priest. Love the pickle at P&L. The bun is also personal preference. The bun at P&L has more substance which is a pro and a con. Ratio is bang on though. Value wise the $8 P&L burger is the same price as the Priest double burger. I MUCH prefer one thick and juicy patty over two thin greasy patties.

Sound reasoning if you ask me. Two different sandwiches and I prefer P&L. Time will tell.

                                    1. re: justsayn

Not for nothing, but choice, especially in close proximity to each other, is an excellent thing and I hope both do well. If the line up is long at one, I'll go to the other. If one's closed, I'll go to the other. Choosing sides and declaring loyalty to one over the other is too limiting.

                                      1. re: GoodGravy

If you like both this is a great outcome! I don't think anyone wants one of the two to fail. Hero on the other hand.....

                      2. re: AngryPorkchop

I think one of the reasons WS didn't succeed is because no one knew it was there. Even when I knew the address, I still had trouble finding it. P&L, with it's big, in-your-face, light-bulb-lit sign, clearly stands out. I think it will be much more successful just because of this alone.

                      3. Maybe not the best burger in town but I liked it when they first opened and went a few times... W Burger bar (College and Yonge) just sent out a promo e-mail. Burger and fries combo for $7.97 dine in or take out during lunch hours (11:30am to 2:30pm) any day of the week

when i used to drink beer more regularly and lived in that part of town a few of their sub-10 dollar pitchers of pbr started basically every friday night for me, especially when the leafs were playing

                            burgers there sucked though

Their veggie burgers are the best in the city.
