Researching 30" Gas Ranges
I'm in the middle of a remodel and am researching stoves to replace our 20 year old stove that just died. I have some musts and some nice to haves. Would love to hear people's suggestions as there is an overwhelming number of choices.
- under $2000
- continuous grates
- self cleaning
- Stainless steel
- 5 burners
- 1 oven, ideally with warming drawer
Nice to have:
- cast iron grates
Also suggestions on the various brands would be helpful.
Any thoughts on the pros and cons of porcelain tops?
What about sealed versus unsealed burners?

I have yet to see a range at that price point with anything resembling a real warming drawer. They're usually just minimally heated drawers that try to keep cooked foods at temp but don't do that very well, so I'd skip that from the wish list.
We just replaced an 11 year old GE XL44 gas range with a Frigidaire Gallery 30-in, 5-Burner (sealed gas)(With included changeable Griddle or Grate for 5th burner), continuous grates - heavy cast iron, Freestanding, 5-cu ft Self-Cleaning Oven, Broiler, Convection Oven, Timed Bake, Gas Range (Stainless) Model #: LGGF3043KF. Got it from Lowes marked down from $999 to $699, still on sale. Doesn't have a warming drawer. Just a storage drawer on bottom. Doesn't come with a broiling pan, so save your old one.
The old stove had 4 burners with a porcelain top. The new one has a continuous grate top. We like the continuous grate top much better.
Had it about a month and very happy with it.
Second the recommendation to look at Frigidaire ranges like these:
They're better at their lower price point than a lot of the more expensive "prosumer" lines like GE Cafe or Profile. Haven't seen a warming drawer or 5th burner worth much in any under 2K models of any brand though. Also recommend posting your query on GardenWeb.
Two years ago I purchased a Kenmore gas range from Sears. It has everything you require except no warming drawer and it is 36" wide. On sale, the price was $1700 or so. There is no convection but the grates are cast iron. I am continually amazed at how well this range has worked for me.
Another thought about your requirements: I am wondering whether there is enough room on a 30" range for five burners. Sure, the manufacturer might put them there, but they would be awfully close together. If you actually used them, you probably would be restricted to small pans and narrow pots.
Finally, my range has sealed burners and a glass top. I have found it amazingly easy to keep clean and vastly prefer this arrangement to the traditional non-sealed burner design.
I'm a HUGE fan of a brushed steel top with sealed burners. I've owned gas on glass, on porcelain, open burner with polished steel, but my all-time favorite cooktop was a GE Profile with cast iron grates and a brushed stainless well top.
Cleanup and overall appearance was leagues beyond anything else. Better still, it kept it's good looks. I wish I had that range today.
The only suggestion that I have as a professional chef is NO SEALED burners. If you spill anything then sometimes it will burn on and it is hard to get off. However, is you have regular burners with a pull out tray underneath than clean- up is easier and you don't run the risk of permanently burned or marred top surface. That price point, although reasonable, really eliminated some "professional " residential stoves.
Honestly, even though sometimes a spill will get cooked on, I have never had a problem getting it off. My Kenmore range is gas on glass. I have my favorite glass-compatible cleaning paraphenalia: some all-purpose spray stuff for regular spills, Weiman glass top cleaner for stuff that does not come off with the spray. So yeah, it's true that I can't just send a pull-out tray through a dishwasher, but even the nastiest mess so far has taken no more than a few minutes of my time to eradicate.
Also, it strikes me that the higher BTU burners on a professional range probably are more apt to create nasty burned on messes than the cooler-burning hobs on a residential range. The hottest burner on my stove is 18000 BTU, which actually is much hotter than most gas residential cooktops will go but still probably less than what you get to use.
My least favorite range was an 8-hob unit with open burners and high polish stainless below. What a PITA to clean! Yes, it had a pull-out drawer, but it was all 90º angles and sharp corners that needed a toothpick or small brush to clean.
Fortunately, it was in a rental and I didn't have to live with more than a few years.
