Shanghai hairy crab
I know the season is almost over, but I really need to get this year's last Shanghai hairy crab in Hong Kong.
I have already been to hotel restaurants and I am looking for really good local Shanghai hairy crab places. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
My in-laws are Shanghainese. Here are the places they frequent or took me to for the cholesterol overdose!!:
- Shanghai Fraternity Association
- Liu Yuan Pavilion
- Jardin de Jade ( ex-chef of SFA )
- Ye Shanghai
- Snow Garden
- Zhejiang Heen
- Wu Kong ( 'special' Hairy crab menu in Autumn! )
Tin Heung Lau in Tsim Sa Tsui is a favorite amongst many local food lovers, particularly a large plate of stir fried roe (and used for serving over rice or Shanghainese flat noodles, like pasta) which can go near the $2000 mark. The mark of luxury is enjoying some mitten crab dish along with their finest 40 year old huadiao (a type of Shaoxing wine).
You can also find a popular cheaper substitute where the invasive species is imported from Holland, and is being served in mitten crab themed banquets. Tsui Hang Village in Causeway Bay may still be offering that (multi-courses featuring mitten crab and roe).
re: K K
something different, have u tried the hairy crab roe soup dumplings at fu sing? they're amazing
tsui hang was good btw? their dim sum was pretty mediocre when i went there...most annoying food trip ive ever had bc my friends BF kept insisting we go to his restaurant picks bc he lives there, disappointment after disappointment haha
Not at Fu Sing, but I had hairy crab roe soup at Shanghai Min Xiao Nan Guo (上海小南國). I liked other dishes better though.
Tsui Hang Village Central was one of my go to places for lunch when I lived in Hong Kong 15 - 20 years ago, as it was close to my office. And I certainly didn't like dim sum. Ha ha. Hairy crab dishes however, were all good.
give the XLB a try at fu sing, get some cha siu, they had these shrimps too last time that were good but im forgetting what they're called and maybe gold coin chicken while ure at it
dim sum is also very good, definitely make sure to get the lo bat go if u go for dim sum
