WTF?!? Chowhound unusable - screen blanks after 1 second

AnneInMpls Nov 22, 2013 08:54 PM

It's been happening on my Android tablet for a while now (several weeks), but now it happens with my big computer and Firefox browser. I click on a link, like a thread or Chowhound>All Boards, and it starts to display then goes blank.

I can't check to see if anyone else has reported this problem, because I CAN'T SEE ANY THREADS OR BOARDS!

Seriously, guys - WTF?

Try using chrome, it seems to help across the board for now. They are aware of the issue and I would imagine are working in it.

If ever you have problems try using chrome, it has fixed most problems for me with many sites. At least have it as a backup option.

There are a couple of threads on this problem. If you can interrupt the page loading just before it completes, that will allow you to work around it. You may have to do it a few times to stop it at the right point.

scroll down -- it's further down the page.

Has been happening on my smart phone and tablet, both Android, for a while now.

Any plans to fix this problem?

            Hi everyone.

This was an ad serving issue, and we believe it's been resolved. Let us know if you continue to have problems.

Actually it is a bit worse on my ipad, it has turned into a game to see if I can keep my finger on the screen just the right way to keep the page from disappearing.

Yes, I've been using the "scroll down" method for a while now, but the question was whether the problem had been resolved.

Thanks for all the follow-ups. We're still unable to reproduce this on our end but are continuing to look into it.

Just curious, are any of you running an ad blocker?

Not running ad blocker, and I'm using Chrome. Still get a blank screen briefly, and/or an "unadorned" version, all in small font, no indentations, etc, then it blinks back to the real page.

Not that I am aware of.

It's basically an older Samsung Galaxy Tab running on the Android OS. Interestingly enough, CH comes through just fine on my smartphone which is also a Samsung using Android.

I've tried rebooting the tablet several times, but that doesn't seem to help

I'd rather scroll than deal with all the ads.

No, and when I just logged onto the site today, still weird font at first, but page didn't disappear. When the page disappears, there is no scrolling down, it is just blank. It has never happened on my think Pad, I use firefox on that.

Wow, it's worse than I thought. If you can't reproduce a problem, you need more than a "just curious" approach. If you actually want to reproduce the problem you need to AHEM, reproduce it. Get exact information from the people who see the problem so you can see it too. Then fix it. Fundamentals of programming 101; maybe 1A.

The screen on my laptop has been blanking frequently after about a second, and reappears in about 5-8 more seconds. Navigation has been very slow. Sometimes I wonder whether EVERY site 'upgrade'(?) causes user problems. Maybe just leave it alone for a while?

Its "their" site, they can upgrade it however and whenever they want. Plus, it's free. Etc., etc., etc.

That was equally true for West Side Drive in Manhattan, which was under constant construction and improvements for a dozen years. It might as well not have been there for all that time it was useless.
I think the laws of unintended consequences have bitten the CH techies as fiercely as Obama's ACA rollout team, just in smaller bites. Anyone is free to shoot their self in their foot, anytime, as often as they wish. America is a great place!
I have managed businesses presumably larger than this one, and I preferred to learn from the mistakes of others rather than make my own.

We provide free content. Lots of content + lots of viewers = more ad revenue for "them."
So it is in their interest *not* to "upgrade it however and whenever they want" if the changes discourage viewers & content providers.

I'm still having the same problems, too: brief blanking of the screen altogether, then the "unadorned" version, then a blink to the "real" version (Chrome, no adblockers on).

Firefox with Adblocker is still blanking-- it now takes a couple of extra seconds for it to blank, but it goes and doesn't come back.

Doesn't disappear -- just have to scroll down.

It's only on the main discussions page, but I was looking for something else today and it happens when I wander over to Chow, too.

I'm getting it with Windows 7/IE. Just throwing that out there to keep the thread alive. At first (during the last week) it would correct itself if I hit refresh - now I just get blank-blank-blank. (Blank screen, that is - I'm not cursing.)
