Best dinner after Berkeley Rep? (Anything new?)
Searched these boards and haven't seen anything in the last three years about where to go to grab dinner after a play. I really don't know Berkeley but I imagine there's been the same kind of change on the dining scene there that there has been in other parts of the Bay Area. Am I wrong? We are up for anything. Thanks!
What time does the play get out? Most of downtown Berkeley shuts down at 9 or 10 p.m. The food has improved in Berkeley but the general hours have not.
Chez Panisse Cafe has instituted a late night steak special, which we've not tried--but have enjoyed going there for a pizza and salad and glass of wine after Berkeley Rep.
Cesar's is also a nice possibility.
Neither obviously new.
Another place open late that we've gone after a play/movie and love, though it's a 15-20 min. drive from the Rep: The Ramen Shop on College.
Just a few changes:
--Five's food is not as reliable as it once was (chef change)
--East Bay Spice Co is a new place on Oxford to have cocktails and Indian food
--Belli Osteria is a nice addition but you would need to go pretheater
--Most of the restos nearby stop serving at 10 except on weekends when Comal and Ippuku stay open until 11.
Revival isn't that new, but it is steps away in the kitchen is open till 10. I like the place but haven't been in a few years.
Comal is upscale, well regarded, and looks like it's 11pm on friday, at least.
A VERY old standard is Au Coqulet. Serves food till late - like 1am - and where you have expectations of limp student food, you'll get reasonable student food.
Taiwan Restaurant has actually weathered my upgrades in chinese food-loving. Sure, it's american-ized, but the classics are decently executed.
A new place is Build Pizza. Till 12 Fri and Sat.
Turkish Kitchen seems a little more upscale - at least I remember walking past.
Phil's Sliders is new
BurgerMeister is new but you can argue is student-ish (11pm).
Beta Lounge is different. I've only seen it from the outside, and I'm prejudiced because the last three restaurants there were unextraordinary. I don't remember any reports here.
Build was OK, kind of weird, I've been in no hurry to go back. Reportedly they have fresh white truffles this week.
Beta Lounge draws a student crowd but the food's OK.
Turkish Kitchen is good. Kind of cafeteria-ish atmosphere (though they do have table service). Not at all upscale, similar to Phil's. Space is pretty much unchanged from when it was Truly Mediterranean.
Comal, Revival, Ippuku, and Turkish Kitchen are now open until 11 Fridays and Saturdays.
Belli Osteria takes reservations for 9:45 so in theory should be OK if you're going to Pianist, though personally I hate to walk into a restaurant when the staff is ready to close up.
Chez Panisse Cafe is open until 11:30 Fri.-Sat. Cesar midnight.
If you're willing to drive there are more options.
Pre-theater, forget Comal, they take reservations only for 5:30 and after that the wait can be an hour. Belli Osteria is good and a great value.
If you're going to The Pianist, it's 90 minutes with no intermission, so you should be out by 9:45. On weeknights, Comal and Revival serve their full menus until 10 but their bars stay open until 11, so if you get your order in they won't rush you out.
Revival also has a late-night menu until 11 Thurs.-Sat.
