Sandoozles BBQ

I noticed from the BlogTO article that yet another BBQ place is opening up, supposedly today. I ordinarily would wait until other brave BBQ fans try it out but I'm going to be in the area (Mt Pleasant & Eglinton) on Saturday killing time. Assuming they have craft beer on tap and can do the 1/4 samplings of the chicken, brisket and pork at lunch time (says on the menu only after 5pm), I'm going to take one for the team and try it early. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

  1. I was wondering if that name was a Parks and Recreation reference, and a quick glance at the menu confirms that it clearly is. So +1 to that place right off the bat.

    1. Saw it mentioned on BlogTO too and came here to see if anyone had any insight on it. I am curious to hear more, I am not in that area often at all but I would make a trip to try it if it is decent!

        1. They tweeted about the draft beer:

Blanche de Chambly, PBR, and FlyingMonkeys Hoptical Illusion and Amber

Pretty good (for a restaurant) other than PBR.

              Hmmmm... Read the review... :-|

Well a couple of things conspired against me and I didn't go there for lunch. At this point I'll let others be the guinea pigs.

            2. I'm currently in the deep south. Upon return I will give this place a go since it's close to where I work.

I noticed the owner commented on the BTO write up and was quite good about things. Didn't lash out like others have. Also good that he is trying to keep his finger on the pulse.

Anyway, let me cleans my palate of N/C 'Bama Q and give it a whirl probably in the new year.
I'm likely to stop by before hand for a MSM and $8 French Fries ;-)
They don't have to change the price of the fries. Change the name. If they call them Frites, they can get $5 no problem.

              1. there is a groupon for this restaurant if anybody is interested...

Thanks for posting, youdonut. We were just talking today about wanting to try this place. Exquisite timing.

                      Don't bother!
I tried it once. That was enough.
Only some of the menu items were available and the staff were more interested in talking to friends and watching TV to bother serving me.

                        Any other reviews/experiences? Anyone??

                        1. re: magic

It's a pleasant enough joint, as I and a couple of friends - one of whom lives in the neighbourhood - discovered when we dropped in for lunch some months ago. Mid-level pricing, decent enough nosh - though I think the slickly-run Stack, on Yonge St. north of Lawrence, does some of the same menu items better at roughly the same price - and, as noted above, exceedingly casual service. Some menu items unavailable. I got the feeling that the owners, one of whom I think served us, were still feeling their way at the time. The menu has since been tweaked a little, I understand. On a strip of Mount Pleasant with some high-priced resto competition, it offers an lower-priced alternative, but I wouldn't schlep across town for it. Easy-going atmosphere. I liked the brisket well enough, but then, I'm a sucker for brisket, no matter how mishandled it has been. Some good beer choices, but how this place will fare against the long-running Granite Brewery, just up the street, is hard to tell. In short, it's acceptable - "mediocre" would be too harsh a descriptor - though hardly memorable. But then, the same could be said for about two-thirds of all restos in Toronto.

Thanks for sharing juno, that's great.

For your interest, they just won Best Dry Wings at the now annual Toronto Wingfest, whatever that means. For me, it means that I purchased the $30 for $60 worth of food Groupon. Living just around the corner, I've wanted to try this place anyway. I'll let y'all know after I've been.

                            1. re: Yongeman

I'll likely be picking up the voucher as well. Look forward to your thoughts, Yongeman.

Did you get a chance to use the coupon Yongeman? I hope you did, but I suppose you can get a refund if not.

                                1. re: foodyDudey

I didn't get to use it, foodydudey, but last week Groupon informed me that Sandoozles had closed and gave me a full refund. Too bad.

And you did not post the scoop here? shame, shame...

I think I read that the owners were first time restauranteurs.. probably did not realise how hard the business actually is..

                                    1. re: pourboi

...and that you have to promote your business. I've walked by there at ten o'clock on a Friday/Saturday night & seen them closing up.

i had a surreal experience there....food was good enough but i felt i like had walked into a fictional restaurant.

                                        - khao san road

                                        1. re: KhaoSanRoad

and you would know about fictional restaurants... bada boom!

                                      2. re: pourboi

Ha ha. It was posted in this thread by youdonut. That's how I found out.

That is great that Groupon took a pro-active approach to let you know. Often times these deal sites hope that you forget about the vouchers.

                                        1. re: ylsf

I agree, ylsf. I've been using coupon deals with caution since The Butcher's scam, and was disappointed about losing the Sandoozles deal, but really happy with the full, uncontested refund.

                            2. Looks like they did not last a year...

BlogTO: "Sandoozles Smokehouse is closed, and while their Facebook claims it's just for renovations, an ad for a turn-key restaurant on Kijiji suggests that's not the case."
