Actually for my sophisticated granddaughter turning 7, loves sushi and Asian. Benihana, last year's wonderful pick (considering..) not available for us this year :( we are 15 in all. Any ideas??

Do you have a budget in mind, per person?

Well funny you should ask.. I called Buddokan and they were happy to offer 1/2 of their center table for $75 pp not including tax tip or beverages, in other words for food only..that is a little over my budget for a 7yr old's b'thday .
For the 4 yr old's birthday the same group went to Fonda in Park Slope (her favorite restaurant), had a great meal with lots of margaritas (the kids had Boings), the bill came to $65 pp all in. So something like that is what I had in mind...
And the hour is getting late.. The birthday is in 2 weeks!

I would try Redfarm, if you order dim sum (dim sum party!) you can get out of there for 65pp. The food is made to be shared and whimsical, visually appealing to kids while still being excellent food. I just wouldn't recommend the soup dumplings or any of the mains except for maybe the chicken stuffed with shrimp. The crispy beef and pac man dumplings are a must for kids.

Along the lines of Benihana, might look at Inakaya.
