Austin Driskill Grill Tasting menu---worth it??
I will be in Austin in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone had done the 8-course tasting menu at the Driskill Grill? It seems rather overpriced ($125) but have never heard anything about it...e.g., for comparison Lola's in Dallas is $79 for 14-course, and even here in Manhattan a 9-course at WD-50 runs $95 and a 6-course at Cru runs $85.

I went in June of 2007 and was not real impressed. It was a special occasion and I chose the Driskill b/c I had heard it was the best restaurant in town. I got the tasting menu paired with wine. The dishes were tasty, but I was not very impressed with the ingenuity or the flavor of the dishes. Service was impeccable and the ambiance was pleasant, though the dining room was a little too dark. I found out during the meal that the head chef had left a couple months before, which explains a lot. He had been the one that brought the restaurant all the accolades. Don't think I'll go back unless I hear from a number of people that things have turned around.

No personal experience because my graduation ceremony overlapped with the only reservation time I could get, but my bf went for his graduation dinner. I believe he had the six course tasting menu which is considerably cheaper (I'm not sure what the actual cost is). From the pictures, the portions ran on the large side for a tasting menu, so I'm sure the six course would be more than enough. The food and service he said were spectacular and well worth the money. I think whether something is worth it or not is a very subjective question. Personally, I'm very willing to pay a lot of money for good food. And when it comes to fine dining, I'm not really looking to see if what I got was the best deal, etc... Other people obviously feel differently. I don't think you'll have a very good time if you go in with the thought that it's too expensive, so in your case, I'd go else where. There are many cheaper tasting menu places in town for sure that are very good as well.

Not to mention the Gourmand at 11Madison Park is 145.
A more accurate comparison would probably be Le Reve in San Antonio (Texas Location). 5 Course $100. Tasting Menu with wine $165
I am sure Driskill Grill is fine and who is to say if it is worth it or not. Location should not be the determining factor, but it does seem pricy.

Don't get me started. -I went to Trio's website and noticed that they do not publish prices on their menu, unless of corse that has recently changed. I called them to inquire and was sorta' stunned. We ate at Chez Panisse for less, you can almost eat at The French Laundry for less. It's getting outrageous and I don't think it has to do with the price of anything. So there!
