Monterey Trip Report
My wife and I stayed 3 nights in Monterey, a wonderful contrast to Las Vegas where we had a function to attend.
Our first meal was in Gilroy at In n Out. We flew in from LAS at about noon and began our drive without eating, so by the time we hit Gilroy we were famished. My wife devoured her cheeseburger and I enjoyed my double meat with fries. The line was out the door, but this is such an efficient operation, we were eating without too long a wait.
Dinner that night was at Crystal Fish, a short walk from our hotel. Decent Japanese, very popular spot, the place was full when we arrived with a short line waiting. We ordered nabeyaki udon and a teri beef, grilled saba combination. Tasty and reasonable, the saba was especially delicious.
After our morning walk along the Monterey Coastal Trail, we hit First Awakenings at the Tin Cannery. We shared a plate of crisp bacon, eggs, with potatoes, and a plate size banana germ pancake with hot coffee. Excellent meal to start our day and a favorite stop for us.
Dinner was in Carmel at Cantinetta Luca, another regular place we enjoy. Shared a insalata mista, followed by clam linguini and their lamb shank. Both dishes were beautifully prepared and delicious, especially the lamb shank. The meat fell off the bone in nice chunks and the sauce was perfect for sopping up with bread. Their house made gelato was outstanding, especially their vanilla gelato which just exploded with flavor, the best I've ever tasted.
Lunch the next day was a quick stop at Cafe Beaujolais in the Carmel Plaza. The chicken salad sandwich and an avocado BLT were very nicely prepared, not just slapped quickly together. The fries accompanying the sandwiches were fresh out of the fryer and piping hot, really good!
Our last dinner was at the Whaling Station, just a block up from our hotel (thanks Melanie!). Shared an excellent iceberg wedge salad, seafood stew and sand dabs, washed down with local Carmel wheat beer. We both prefer the cioppino at Tadich Grill in SF, but the food at the Whaling Station was nicely prepared and very tasty. We'll plan another visit to taste the steaks served there.
Next morning was our drive back to the city, stopped at Red's to pick up coffee and doughnuts for the ride. Another great visit to our favorite area on the Central Coast thanks to you fellow hounds.
