DooWee & Rice Closing

Just saw it on their Facebook page. Horrible news...We're huge fans of their food and put it high on our list of weeknight take-out rotation.

  1. He's closing because he'd rather open a restaurant in London?

    Seriously?

This is the worst food news of 2013.

Duy Tran seems to have aspirations of being the next David Chang, but Chang didn't shut down Momofuku Noodle Bar and Ssam Bar when he wanted to write a cookbook, expand his empire, and become a celebrity chef.

Um, maybe he just likes London better than Boston.

What is the Wonder Bra connection?

          1. re: StriperGuy

            I was wondering this myself.

Do you actually call it "Wonder Bra", or was Dr. Freud doing your typing?

            1. re: hyde

Back in my bachelor days we actually used to call it Wonder Bra.

        Hey Otter,

I've been browsing Chowhound and doing my best to reply to questions and concerns I may have passed over before. I appreciate all the replies in defense of what I was trying to accomplish in the past. You can count on receiving a personal invite to my friends and family tasting nights happening in the coming months.

I did shutter my Somerville location rather abruptly and probably should have thought it over longer but I am happy to announce that I will be back very soon now that we have gotten over all of our delays at Wonder Bar.

I've been traveling, eating, cooking, learning, and will be back with so much inspiration and drive I need people around me to calm me down. All good vibes though.

I am 27 now, I opened DooWee and Rice at 23 clueless as to what it really took to run a restaurant..but now that I have full creative freedom at WonderBar without all the other responsibilities of running a full blown restaurant on my back I can do what I really wanted, put forth inspired dishes without over-complicating ingredients or techniques.

Again, thank you for baring with me through this delay and I look forward to getting back in the kitchen with more discipline, drive, and overall happiness.

Email me at: DooWeeAndRice@gmail.com so I can add you to my tasting night invites list. Its on the house btw = )

Great to hear. I was a fan of DooWeeAndRice and live close to WonderBar. Can't wait.

            Hi, DooWee.

I follow you on Instagram and saw your post about doing house dinners in the meantime. Are you still open to those? My hubby and I were devotees of DooWee when we lived in Arlington and he could eat hearty fries by the boatloads...wondering if maybe we could get you on the North Shore for a dinner with us and a few friends?

              Greetings MBA,

Unfortunately I had to put a hold on doing private dinners for now, the two weeks I did it I was booked all my open days. I can however invite you and your friends to our upcoming tasting nights coming up next week and the weeks after. Email me at: dooweeandrice@gmail.com so I can add you. Heart-y fries WILL be served = ).

              Good luck with WonderBar venture...

          2. This makes me SO SAD. I asked on FB and he said a "unique chinese restaurant" is taking over the space, and he helped them develop their menu. I'm still sad. We'll probably go tonight even though I'm sure it'll be mobbed.

Eater says it will be Teriyaki House - anyone know if that is a chain?

              1. re: soylent_greens

I hope it's not the same thing that's in Southie across from the Broadway T Stop.

            2. Well this sucks.

Is the Wonderbar project still on?

He says that WonderBar is still on, and that he's focusing on that and the new London location of DooWee. He also says he'll be distributing his sauces for use in restaurants around the area, including the Teriyaki House that's taking over his space.

I can't believe that of all projects he's favoring one where he's in the basement of an allston college Dbag bar

                  1. re: jgg13

If I remember correctly, WonderBar is where he got his start as a line cook and he's taking it as a sort of challenge to 'upgrade' the place with a selection of his bao buns and sauces.

But I'm sort of with you -- his Somerville location is so popular that it sells out of food before closing nearly every night, lines out the door.. but he'd rather be in Allston with a limited menu?

Then again last year he nearly closed the Somerville location in favor of doing The Great Food Truck Race so I have no idea what's going on in Duy's head.

I saw him mention on twitter to someone that the wonder bar spot will allow him to offer more varieties of baos as he was no longer limited by the somerville space, or something like that. So perhaps it was a kitchen size issue?
