Great food in Davis, CA?

  • 7

I'm playing a concert at the Mondavi Center this weekend and I've never been in Davis. Any recommendations? Hole in the wall places are fine BTW. I live in NYC so I'm attracted to food that is better or different...

  1. Hmmm....not usually a lot of action on that topic, but you could try a search using I-80. I haven't been in awhile, but there are some places "downtown", I think 1st, 2nd, 3rd street.

Here is a Davis search. The dumpling house is recent.

Break a leg! Does that work for concerts? Now I want't to check it out!

    1. I have not tried a lot of the eateries in Davis, but I like Crepeville.

      1. Redrum burger is a great divey place, the ostrich burger is worth noting. Waaaayy better than shake shack

And coming from nyc go to the farmers market if you can and hit whatever taco truck you see! Also at farmers market will be a stand selling afgan "bolanis" that are great- look for the pumpkin- and would make a delicious plane snack

        1. I've been spending time there as First Born now attends the university.

Dumpling house: just ok. I've had way better in SF, Burlingame, and Chinatown in NYC.

Redrum: no clue: I look forward to trying it!

Burger and Brew: I love this place: and it's close to the university.

Crepeplace: just ok, nothing to write home about.

Farmers market on Sat am: yes to everything Trockwood said! and I love the interesting paletas (popsicles). As I try more places I'll try to post back.

So good to see a post from Chardgirl again!

Thanks for mentioning the paleta folks. I remember that they got a big buzz at one of the early Eat Real Festivals in Oakland, selling out the first day. Then I promptly forgot about them. But they're back on my radar again.

          2. The top Davis restaurant is Osteria Fasulo. Great Italian food at (unfortunately) Italian prices, which are viewed as rather steep by the locals. Other more affordable restaurants include Seasons and Mustard Seed. If you like sushi, Mikuni is strongly recommended. For hamburgers, Burgers and Brew and Tommy J's are favorites. Davis has also a brewpub called Sudwerk. The beer is good but the central European style food is undistinguished.

Thank you bclevy! Your post is just what *I* needed even though I wasn't the original posting chow-er. Driving all the way to Sacramento was daunting, but I was considering that... I'll go through your list first.
