Horse Thief BBQ

We were checking out Grand Central Market on a beautiful fall Saturday (yesterday) and had lunch at Horse Thief. From what I'd read, I knew the thing to go for first and foremost is the brisket (as it's owned and operated by Texas expatriates), and our batch was, to my non-expert tastes, spot on and delicious. Great smoke, nice ring and very moist. Didn't have any other meats, but the ribs looked just fine. As for sides, the blue cheese and bacon potato salad was very tasty, the mac and cheese we all loved (it's not overwhelmed by cheese, and I prefer that "drier" variety), and I also really enjoyed the banana pudding (with a vanilla wafer base), even though I probably hadn't yet digested the banana cream pie from Apple Pan the previous night. Moreover, the space is awesome, especially on a beautiful day, since it's al fresco. There's a really spacious patio with picnic tables, right across from the Angels Flight Railway.

  1. You must have had a better batch there. Our brisket and rib tips well cooked and somewhat juicy but zero discernible smoke taste. Found sauce too sweet and in the end lacking a sort of salty fatjuicy smoky flavor that is what I like. I will say I'll be back tho to try the pulled pork which did gave a nice big scoop on others plates. I'm glad you liked it better than me I want to give another shot. Great location I concur on patio looking at angels flight there on hill street. I liked the greens. Beans just black beans in BBQ sauce.

    1. Was the Bulgarini Gelato cart (right next to HTBBQ) open for business?

It's not right next to it, it's closer to G&B, in the corner, right in front of Pharmacy... honestly I think it's a BAD location... but the scooper didn't seem to mind being in the shade...

We looked right at the angels flight from our seats in sun at lunch. Was nice

        2. What's the parking situation at the renovated Grand Central Market? Is there still a lot behind/to the west? Free? Need validation?

There is a garage next door north of the market that does validate with purchase. Egg Slut is now open.

Do you enter the garage from Broadway or behind (west) or both?

          2. And brisket's not something to be stingy about. Two three to four inch pieces with greens and beans 13 bucks I think. Ie two brisket sandwiches at labels 1.5 pounds brisket maybe. No smoke. But jus.

They have lowered the prices on the brisket. Think the platter and the sammie are both now $11. And re the above question re Bulgarini, I did not see it open yesterday, and I looked for it. And, yup, Eggslut opened today. As a big fan of sluts, I'll have to check it out.

Yea, I don't like eggs either.

            2. I'm pretty picky about BBQ and horse thief is just pretty good. i usually get fatty end brisket and make a sandwich with just a little sauce. slightly pricey, but satisfies my BBQ hankering when i can't get to bigmista or bludso's. but it's a great addition to GCM and that outdoor space is sweet. feels like the start of a real public plaza. i believe bulgarini has shut down their stand for the winter. i think the popsicle people did, too.

Thanks for the updated on Bulgarini... unlike the Bulgarini guy who seemed to enjoy the fact that they were never busy... that Popsicle girl HUSTLED GCM... She probably could still sell in a blizzard... LOL!

yeah, the bulgarini guy definitely had that "summer job" vibe. now the hustler is at the Pressed Juicery. She's working it. I sense a lot of wheatgrass in her chi.
