Indian Grill Manalapan
Proving the old adage that you can't tell a book by its cover ...
In the same plaza on Rt 9 that once held Mo Green's is a very unassuming Indian restaurant called simply Indian Grill. We almost didn't try it as some in our party are hung up on looks, but we were hungry and there is a large liquor store nearby so, armed with a few bottles, in we went.
A nice couple greeted us and led us to our table. We watched Indian music videos as we perused the large menu. A minimum of arguing later we ordered fried catfish, stuffed naan, and Muligatawny soup to start, followed by chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, Manchurian cauliflower, butter uttapam, rice, and more naan. We ordered the chicken and the uttapam mild and everything else 8 on a 1-10 scale.
The fish and stuffed naan were good, with the naan having a nice kick due to a lot of chilies and garlic. We finished a bottle of reisling with it and even the doubters started relaxing and enjoying.
Then the mains arrived and by the time we finished mopping up the last of the sauce with our naan I was sweating and happy. OK, maybe the housemade habanero hot sauce our hostess provided helped with the sweat, but everything was spiced well and very tasty. We even found out that Manchurian cauliflower was not specifically on the menu, but they made it for us anyway.
Liking this place, we all decided to order a few things for dessert. We had some of each thing they offered - dumplings with milk and sweet syrup and housemade ice cream in flavors like rose, coconut, and pepper. Once again it was all good.
We left already planning our next visit.
