I'm visiting my brother and girlfriend in a couple of weeks and would like to get them a gift certificate for a nice restaurant/pub. They live between Leeds and Harrogate. Not super-spendy please - I live in the States so get sticker shock at the best of times in the UK. More importantly, I just can't afford the high end stuff!

  1. If I lived in that neck of the woods, I'd appreciate someone treating me to dinner at Van Zeller's in Harrogate.

Very reasonably priced at £50 for three courses.

I wish it had been open when we travelled there fairly often to see family.

Thanks Harters. I'm also thinking about The Star in Harome, which I see you recommended in another thread, and which is only about an hour's drive from my brother's.

How about their new branch in York - I think it's called Star in the City. I think that is a bit nearer.

York would be substantially nearer. Chatsworth, driving in the dales/ moors can be very slow, especially after dark - though of course you could buy them lunch, which is better value anyway.

    2. My brother likes nothing better than the challenge of driving through the wilds of Yorkshire at night, preferably ideally with fog and sheep . . .

Given work schedules, they're actually more likely to go for a leisurely lunch, so it will probably come down to city vs country.

(Don't know why, but I couldn't reply directly to Mr Gimlet's post.)
