Need not-awesome and not-pricey sushi tonight - SM/Venice

All of this board's considerable discussions of the cadre of fine sushi joints won't really help. 13 year old son just arrived and says he'd like sushi tonight - which, for him, means we need a nice variety of rolls. So, we just need a rec for good quality, but needn't be inspiring, sushi place with good rolls in the Santa Monica, WLA (west of Bundy - not going back to my old hood by Sawtelle tonight) or northern Venice. Time be of the essence. Thanks yo.

respectfully disagree with the recommendation of Sushi King

Someday, wsg, I'm going to say something so offensive to your culinary compass, you're going to say "disrespectfully disagree ..."

although i may be incited to say that someday, somehow i don't think it will be in response to any of your recommendations!

I think Sushi King is great for a kid.

          3. If you don't mind the din, Hara Sushi would probably fit the bill, and it's just barely in your preferred area...

              1. If not too late kula on sawtelle. He'll like the conveyer belt. But that's on sawtelle. But it's new too.

I bet my 9 year (and I) will love this. CA roll is his go to roll!

                2. tsukiji sushi sen... think it's kind of new. Very friendly, good fish.

                  1. Have you tried Pearl Dragon yet? They make decent sushi.

                    1. So? Where did you go, Wayno?

We wound up at Sushi King, per JL's rec (and before WSG's "respectful disagreement"). It worked fine. Had to wait about 30 mins for a table, but the 3 of us were happy. Nothing too adventurous or awe-inspiring. Crab rolls and salmon rolls were fine. I thought the structural integrity of the rolls was a bit weak, and the tomago was too dense; but the sunomono with shrimp was great. DirtyWEO, I thought about Pearl Dragon, since, as you know, it's in our 'hood, but we've go there a few times already and I wanted something different and maybe less pricey. Topping off the evening - because the kid is obsessed with apple pie - we hit up Apple Pan for dessert. Per the board's recs, I had the banana cream pie, and it was awesome! Kid really liked his apple pie, so it was all good.

sounds like, all told, it worked out very well.
                          thanks for reporting back.

                            Apple Pan sounds good!

I'm glad your dinner was good, Wayno. Next time, as jessejames recommended, try Kula on Sawtelle. It's conveyer belt sushi and fun with any sushi-loving kids...but go early to avoid the wait.

Thanks for reporting back! And sorry to hear about your not-awesome wait.
