Last Chance Kitchen-11/6/2013-SPOILER ALERT

Wow, so no recap yet. OK, I'll try; but don't stone me if I'm no LindaWhit.

Bene finally gets eliminated and has to face Janine in LCK. Since Bene royally messed up the beautiful fresh produce provided for the last EC he (and Janine) will have only canned and frozen produce available. They can use any proteins though.

They both go for frozen peas. Bene picks asparagus, Janine takes corn. They're also both using pancetta: Bene with swordfish, Janine with scallops. Tom is concerned that Bene's swordfish tartare will make him sick. Bene is loving the interaction with Tom--"he's my homeboy now."

Janine has a pea puree and a corn puree in individual plastic bottles. Both become "squirters." C'mon Janine, you can't put super hot liquids in plastic bottles--of course they squirt. She almost catches Tom.

Both plates are beautiful. Bene has a duo: seared swordfish and swordfish tartare with a sweet pea and asparagus puree. Tom takes more than a taste: he almost polishes off the plate and Bene knows he's won. Janine has a scallop with pancetta and a minted pea puree and a corn puree.

It's close . . . but Janine won!

  1. And I wanted this recap to exist so I could comment on two LCK observations.

    1) Jason is still pissed he was eliminated. All of the other chefs were cajoling/encouraging. Jason stood in the back silently.
    2) Janine has to be rooting for a female to be eliminated. She's now living in a house with Aaron, Bene, Bret, Jason, Michael and Ramon. Ugh.

Yeah I noticed Jason was still pissy. Get over yourself, Jason.

      1. re: gaffk

Especially Michael. That would be unbearable.

        1. re: Leepa

What, you don't think Janine is digging being the focus of Michael's "sweetheart", "boo boo", "snookums", and "darling"s?

        2. re: gaffk

On the other hand, that probably means she's the only one with a room to herself. At least, that's how it works on a lot of reality shows...

        3. Nice recap. I've been meaning to watch it, but the hubby turned off flash on my laptop to decrease pop up ads and I don't know how to easily turn it back on:)

I like this season's twist of challenging the eliminated cheftestant to do well with what kicked them off. Kind of a prove you know how to do this moment. And if I were ever to be on Top Chef, you can bet I would not make risotto

I would also stay away from scallops. "This is Top Chef, not Top Scallop!"
Scallops are one of my favorite things to eat. I'd hate to have to cook them under that kind of pressure, though.

Thank you so much for doing the recap and getting this going!

            2. I was annoyed by Bene's comment at the end that his dish was better and that Tom must've been distracted by the pretty blond. You lost, deal with it.

              1. I'm glad to see Janine win. She kind of annoyed me during the regular show when all of her talking heads were in a cocktail dress while everyone else was in t shirts, and the whole sandal-gate while cooking. She's grown on me, however. I liked Bene a lot better what we saw of him in the sous chef challenges on Top Chef Masters. Seems like a nice enough guy, just didn't see anything that impressive from him, altho this looked pretty yummy.

Re sandal-gate, that wasn't really her fault, or rather, I don't think she intentionally wore sandals to cook in. the challenge started immediately, and they had to cook in whatever they were wearing at the time, it seemed.

                  1. re: LurkerDan

Well she intentionally wore them in for the first day. I'm sure not intentionally wearing them for cooking.... but if you look at most competitive cooking shows, (let me throw out some HK) they cook on the first day in.
I do think she could have said I don't want to wear a chain/strap strappy cocktail dress in all of my talking heads because I'd like to be taken seriously and not on my looks.

                    1. re: Firegoat

That is a fair point, and she probably could or should have expected cooking on day 1. And yes, I agree re wanting to be taken seriously and not on your looks, but it's hard to know with these chefs and what they have been told or prompted with. A lot of them came in seeming to focus on their looks (she was one of the biggest offenders for sure), but I don't know if that means they are all so looks-conscious or if it means the elves prompted that behavior.

In any case, yes, she's responsible for the sandals in the kitchen, but I don't know if it's entirely fair to treat it as if she chose to wear sandals into the kitchen, if that makes sense. Still, I am routinely amazed by how some of the chefs treat the show; it's as if they never ever watched it and did no research on it before showing up. The sandals on day one is just one more example.

                      1. re: LurkerDan

I could see the cocktail dress in the talking head as more producers pushing someone that doesn't know the shoe more.
I can't hate her for it, in fact I like her quite a bit, I wish they would have let her say, this is stupid. And dress in a t shirt or like the other chefs.

                2. I think Janine got a bit of a bump, not from being pretty, but from "possession is 9 points of the law" or whatever the saying is. Though that isn't really fair.

Yeah, Tom seemed to imply something like that, didn't he?
