Screen clears at end of page.

Some change that took effect on Wednesday, November 6, causes the display to go all white when the page is completely painted. This is on an iPad with an older IOS. I suppose the answer is to upgrade. A nuisance.

  1. Hi GH1618,

We suspect the issue you're seeing is due to being on an old version of iOS. So it's true that you may need to update, especially if you're on iOS3. Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks,

    Dave MP

    1. This is also happening with my first edition Kindle - the page loads, I can see everything, and then goes white.

I just posted about this on another thread.

        http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/923871

In order to read a page, I have to manually stop it from loading before it completes, or the page goes totally white.

My phone is an LG Marquee using Android Gingerbread 2.3. This happens with Firefox, Boat and lightning browsers, and does not happen with any other sites. All the text on the page appears and is readable before the whitewash kicks in.

I suspect the OP is right... When you fixed the "black abyss" problem, this one creeped up in its place.

Since it is occurring on iOS, Kindle, and Android, does that mean it will be fixed? Seems clear that this is a site programming problem, and not browser/OS/phone specific.

If you will not reprogram the mobile site, how about giving us access to the full site on our mobile devices? That would make a whole lot of people happy anyway.

        Thank you

        Mr Taster

        1. re: Mr Taster

Mr. Taster, I'm using a Kindle Fire and having the same issue. But ... I normally (er, before this latest kablooey) see the regular site, not the mobile site. Go figure.

      2. Now (Nov. 15) the screen doesn't always clear, but sometimes does. And I can no longer expand the list of pists or reply to a post, except at the top level. This tinkering is a nuisance. I wish the software were jyst reset to its state at the start of November. It was working correctly then.

I have had the problem of not being able to expand already read posts, too. I think I've had this problem before the whitewash update, though. Expand All generally works.

Engineering, and movement on the whitewash issue?

        2. I've got it worse - I don't even get a title block to tell these guys that my screen goes blank a few seconds after it opens. I just got lucky here and hijacked a semi-relevant thread. For the record, I'm using an older version of Safari, but I'm on a G4 iMac and can't upgrade … and I am goddamned if I'm going to go out and buy a new computer just to stay on Chowhound!

          1. And now the Boards list won't stay up! I've got some stuff to post on Tennessee & Kentucky and I can't get to it before the screen goes blank. Okay, tech guys, are you paying ANY attention here?

It's the week-end, Will. I intend to bump up my own thread on Site Talk tomorrow late morning, hoping someone sees it and can fix the problem then.

                Not good news, I'm afraid.

They broke a perfectly good website and have no intention of fixing it.

Thanks, Mr. T. Obviously they're not paying attention to Me. The upside is that I cannot see any of the intrusive ads on the right side. There's always a silver lining somewhere.

We need a full site option for mobile users.

DaveMP, is there a reason why this hasn't been suggested as a workaround? What's the resistance at ChowHQ to providing a full site option for mobile users?

                    1. re: Mr Taster

Well Lah-dee-dah. Mention not being able to see the ads and what should suddenly appear? You guessed it. The Missing Horizontal Bar. It's magic, I tell ya.

            2. I didn't even know there were two sites. All I know is that it worked well on my iPad in October and doesn't now. I don't want it work differently, I just want it to work.

I usually use a "full site" option, because usually the display on mobile sites can't be stretched. I do this all the time, because otherwise I can't read some things. I've always been able to stretch a Chowhound screen.

              1. Hi all,

                Just some clarifications here:

If you're on a Kindle or iPad, you should be seeing a tablet version of the site. This looks pretty much just like the desktop site, but the dropdowns work slightly differently since it's a touchscreen.

We are able to replicate the white-out bug on our old Kindle, and based on GH1618's report, it's likely the same as what's happening on an old iPad (we don't have that old of an operating system at this point).

Mr. Taster, it would be helpful to confirm that you are really seeing the mobile site on your LG Marquee. It has the mobile-drawer symbol (red box w/ three white lines) in the top left, and the magnifying glass symbol in the top right. I am just wanting to confirm this, since you're the only person in this thread who's seeing any problem w/ what should be a mobile device.

                Thanks in advance,
                Dave MP

Okay, cool. Three follow up questions:

                    1) Are you still seeing the whitewash problem?

                    2) When you manually stop the page from loading (as described above), are you then still able to post?

                    3) When the screen does go white, is it a completely white screen? In other words, you see literally nothing else on the page? Or do you still see the header (the mobile drawer, the magnifying glass, etc).

                    Thanks,
                    Dave MP

                    1. re: Dave MP

                      1) Yes
                      2) It depends at what point in the process I manage to stop the page from loading. If I stop it very early, the text appears very small but content is readable but not reply-able. If I stop just at the end of the loading process, it may or may not be reply-able. Previously read (collapsed) threads are sometimes difficult or impossible to expand. When I do manage to expand a post, I may or may not be able to reply.
                      3) Totally, utterly, completely white. No graphical elements remain.

Thank you for your attention to this, Dave MP.

                      1. re: Dave MP

Dave MP, I wound up configuring my browser to "request desktop site" (which was easier than I anticipated).

The full site loaded, seems to stay on screen for about 4 seconds after the pageload completes, and then whoosh-- the whitewash. When the whitewas takes over, the screen becomes unscrollable; it is completely white with no other detail.

I also have been intermittently unable to expand or collapse both individual and all threads. Whether or not I am able to expand/collapse threads seems to be tied to at which point I manually stop the pageload.

                  2. I am getting what I believe is the same behavior, on chow.com but not chowhound on a desktop. Running Chrome 18.0.1025.168 and windows xp. Chow.com loads, then blanks. as if it is searching or trying to load something. Unable to even stop it midload.
