Flavio al Velavevodetto- totally disappointing

Went at 9:30 one night this week. We were the last diners in a half empty restaurant. Dinner started on a really positive note when they offered to take us to their wine wall to select a wine.

We ordered their house special ravioli, and while we were choosing wine, a staff member suggested we have their carbonara, so we asked for two half orders, a half of each pasta. Needless to say, two full orders came out, which was way too much food as we had ordered a second course as well. The ravioli came out semi- hot, and the carbonara was just ok. When we told them they sent out two full orders and we only wanted halves, and that the ravioli wasn't hot, their entire attitude changed- it went from helpful, to, I don't know, resentful? The main course of their special meatballs came and it turned out they were fried meatballs- fair at best. By then, we were the last people in the restaurant and the staff was setting the restaurant up for the next day totally around us. Of all of the meals we've had so far, this was by far the least inspired, and the worst.

"The main course of their special meatballs came and it turned out they were fried meatballs- fair at best."

Was your menu in Italian or English? Do you read any italian? If so, the meatballs are described as fried. You cannot fault them for that.

Thank you for the explanation. They did bring red sauce though. BTW, they were the ones who suggested half orders of pasta, not us.

Just wondering, is it possible that you actually did get half orders? their pasta dishes are on the huge side.

Wait, rereading - had you asked, for the two of you, a total of half a ravioli order and half a carbonara order? Bcs that would not be happening, they would, at best, bring half and half for each of you.

Quite seriously, they offered us a half of order of each because they insisted we try their carbonara, which ended up being the worst pasta of our week. And further to that, it was the worst meal experience of the week and we're still going.

Ive never seen the practice of half orders in Rome or a dish with two or three pastas served on one plate - the classic dishes arent very expensive at simple trattorias, and at Flavio the servings are large. It sounds like you had one of those classic misunderstandings which is not likely to turn out well. So sorry you did not enjoy your meal - our experience at lunch time was very relaxed and different - but glad you had offsetting good experiences elsewhere.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience at Flavio. It's quite possible that they didn't understand your request of two half portions. It's not really something that is common to do in Roman restaurants. It's also possible that you did in fact receive two half portions, since their normal portions are so huge?

In any case, it shouldn't have come out cold.

And yes, their special meatballs are a traditional Roman dish, made of left over boiled beef, and then fried. I can understand if you were expecting meatballs in sauce, that you were dissapointed.

Just keep in mind, that Flavio is a very simple kind of restaurant, not fancy.
