'White Orchid S.E Asian Cuisine' - First impression

Located in the plaza on 360 Hwy 7 East where the now defunct Tan Che Kee used to be. This new S.E Asian Cuisine place claimed to have one of the best tasting 'Hainanese Chicken Rice' (using Free Range Chicken) in town.
Our lunch in this modernistic, small and cozy place consisted of the following:
- Satay Platter of chicken, beef and lamb
- Hainanese Chicken Rice
- Seafood Laksa
For $14, IMO, the Satay dish was way overpriced. Though the well seasoned meat was quite delicious and tender, however from the presentation, one could detect the chef 'cutting corner'!! By 'pre-grilling' the meat over charcoal ahead of time and then deep frying the skewers prior to delivery, this lazy approach killed most of the charbroiled smokey aroma! Bad move!! The peanut based dipping sauce was very good though!
Hainanese Chicken Rice at $9 was acceptable. Chicken was indeed more flavorful and possess more chewy texture than most of their competitors in town. The aromatic but greasy rice, result of mixing the rice with chicken fat, was unfortunately overwhelmed by the over-handed use of fried minced garlic. Great for a couple of bites but overly excessive for the palette for a whole bowl!!
The bowl of Seafood Laksa looked a bit lacked luster. The generous use of ingredients was unfortunately not enough to lift the spicy, dense but rather 'one dimensional' tasting broth. Void of exotic S.E Asian coconut-ty, fish sauce and spice seasoning, this rendition tasted actually kind of ummmm.....Weird??!!
The menu also featured a huge section of curries and other dishes. Learning that the Chef actually spend some time cooking in Singapore, I will give it a second chance, check out their curries, before delivering a final verdict!
