dinner by beach/sunset

jessejames Nov 6, 2013 10:06 AM

OK, so Nobu Malibu booked solid....any other good ideas? Sometimes Dukes can be fun, we like the lobster, maybe something in santa monica? also there's that spot by point dume/zuma called the sunset...anyone been there?

really gotten a lot of good tips from you hounds recently - thank you.

    Don't overlook Geoffrey's for this http://www.geoffreysmalibu.com/

If, notwithstanding high price point, spectactular setting and ambience and uber-trendy atmosphere are desirable (and probably way better food than Duke's) sounds good you can consider Nikita (shares parking lot with Nobu). Use the search to find my recent posting about Nikita.

Dined at Sunset this summer. Food was dreadful. Avoid.

too bad about that, looked like a nice location.

is shudders restaurant or anywhere else in santa monica something to consider?

went there a few months ago - loved it. want to try something different, but same kind of sunset experience....my wife is more into the atmosphere/romance - but a 3 lb spiny lobster is romantic too if you ask me!

              "is shudders restaurant...something to consider?"

This is either one of the funnier puns or a great typo...

and i guess a typo and a pun!

There are plenty of hounds who like Shutter's for what it is. I am usually not a big fan of "hotel" restaurant food, but there are exceptions to that out there. Is Shutter's one of them? Not by my way of thinking but it's solid.

          2. Wayno Nov 6, 2013 11:20 AM

Following up on our above exchange about Nikita, if you are willing to go early - because, with the time change, if you want a "sunset experience," you'll have to be there by 5 - it is hard to get an on-the-beach/water meal in a beautiful venue (with Nobu unavailable) that would surpass Nikita (notwithstanding the flaws discussed in my prior post). For a more removed view of the sunset, you also can consider the Penthouse at the Huntley or restaurant at the Casa del Mar (Catch?). But, those are not the equal of the Nikita venue. Gladstones, of course, has a prime location as well, but the food is beyond horrendous and it's much more downmarket - so I'm just mentioning it because Nikita's oceanside location is its equal in terms of geography, but light years beyond it in terms of food.

I know ipse has suggested this before - but I am a Costco Amex man - not gold, not platinum - do I have this service as well? Or just the giant coke and gummy pizza at Costco service?

Please report back on Nobu. Did you get there in time for sunset now DST is over?

Maybe more downscale than you want, but the Chart House is usually solid with a great location and view. And Moonshadows has gone through a lot of ups and downs with opinions of their food over the years but also is closer in than Geoffrey's and has unobstructed views right on the water.

                                      Contraception works as well.

(Just don't buzz the concierge for that)

Abstinence for you? Jesting...I love my little fresser but she's too young for most restaurants. I think it's cool that the Offalo went to littlefork oyster happy hour with his girl.

Ate at Nikita next to Nobu last night and it was very good. Mushroom pizza was outsanding. Nikita crab rolls were good and the chicken was tasty. Service was good and the setting fantastic.
