Is PDT over-hyped?

  • 7

A friend and I are visiting another friend in a couple of weeks and were brainstorming some good bars to go to. I'd heard of PDT from way back, but not a lot since. Is it worth going to or has its day passed?

  1. It's still very good. Love The Shark! And the Mezcal Mule, Benton's Old Fashioned. I love the hot dogs there.

However, there's a lot of competition these days--and a lot of that competition is so much easier to get into.

Depends if you're willing to show up right when PDT opens to get a bar stool (my preference) or spend forever on the phone to maybe get a table.

Where else were you thinking of--Death & Co, Pegu Club, Milk & Honey, Pouring Ribbons, Booker & Dax, Mayahuel, Golden Cadillac, Amor y Amargo...?

Thanks for the tip, I was probably going to call ahead by a few days (a week?) for a reservation, as I abhor lines. My friend lives in Alphabet City if you have any other recs off the top of your head. I would say we prefer cocktails over beer, and good bar food is always a plus. (I know that covers a huge range, my apologies.)

PDT only takes same day reservations at 3pm each day.

Best cocktails and food would probably be at a restaurant actually. Empellon Cocina or Momofuku Ssam are both great options, as is Alder. The Ssam bar director is ex-PDT actually.

I had written down that Golden Cadillac opens today - is it open already?

You're correct. But they did a soft opening/friends & family a few days ago.
