My 2 Cents - Lobster Rolls: B&G vs Neptune

Lobster loving family was in town and we hit both spots in a 3 day period - having lobster rolls at both places. I've dined at both places several times but never within such a close time frame.

Apriori, I thought I'd prefer Neptune - unadulterated chunks of lobster drizzled with warm butter sounds decadent and is more aesthetically pleasing than B&G's mayo-based lobster mixture.

Bottom line: I prefer B&G - their lobster was much fresher tasting than Neptune's as well as there was a little shell in Neptune's mixture.

In this never-ending debate - my vote goes solidly to B&G.

  1. Thanks for the report. B&G doesn't get much attention on this board anymore, but it's nice to hear they still deliver.

    1. I think the idea of the warm lobster roll with butter doesn't live up to the reality - sorry CT. It sounds great but doesn't deliver, regardless of who prepares it.

      1. I will be that guy... but B&G always just gets me that they ask $27 bucks for a roll.

I HONESTLY think the Beantown Pub lobster roll (double the size) for $10 is as good.

I was a little surprises that B&G is more expensive than Neptune.

B&G's lobster roll is $29 where as Neptune's is $27 (this is the price they list online, I recall is being $29 but my memory may be off). Neptune's oysters were definitely cheaper than B&G.

B&G's service was definitely better than Neptune's - here's a pic of Neptune's lobster roll

I appreciate the pic, the roll is kind of pathetic.

this looks like the last Neptune lobster roll i had 2 years ago.....after I had eaten half of it and my DC had eaten a bit at well.

I wonder if the downsizing is consistent or depends on the day or the staff in the kitchen that day.

I was at Neptune recently but had the pork confit with fried oysters on top as great as usual. Didn't see any rolls coming out so I have no recent experience. We were at the bar and the servers were friendly and great....poured the last of the bottle of a French rose in my glass after my full pour.

It was a very unusual day....August...and we were able to park right in front of the restaurant....that lets you know how unusual a day it was. Late lunch.

          2. Frankly, I have a difficult time getting excited about any of these.....at Friendly Fisherman in Eastham, *THIS* is what you get for ~$18...and it is fresh right out of their market pools:

YES! Science Chick...THAT'S what I'm talking about! Could not agree with you more. Plus, it's always served with a smile at no extra charge........

:) I didn't mention, but of course this usually comes with fries too. I just asked them to leave them off (sometimes I need to save myself from me).

            2. Ive had too many sh*tty experiences at BG to ever go there again for pretty much any reason.

                    B&G's roll has also shrunk..

                    1. re: hargau

I was just thinking I cant afford either currently so the point is moot.

                      1. re: hyde

I CAN afford it, but thankfully God gave me a brain which can spot a rip-off when I see one, so the point is still moot.

                    2. A blast (of bile) from the past, Chowhound Patient Zero Jim Leff on his less-than-edifying impressions of B&G Oyster, from 2006: http://www.chow.com/food-news/1528/a-... Kind of hilarious.

Yah, heck I'll pile on, I had a pretty rotten meal that I posted about at B&G way back when. I would NEVER eat there again.

                          Hysterical and on point.

I trust this source on rolls as i have tried several on their list and have come to the same conclusions

I concur with their finding also.

                            2. If your ever in the Salem/Beverly area the rolls at Rowands seafood market are really good for $10. No toasted roll, but a lot of fresh lobster lightly dressed in mayo.
