Tacos Puntas Cabras.

The great debate of a good tortilla led me back to Tacos Puntas Cabras, where I grazed on nearly everything they had. What I found was a good tortilla, but what makes me happy is the fish tacos

The other seafood tacos, tostadas and coctele are good, but the hero here, without a doubt, is the fish tacos. I like how the fish stays crisp and I LOVE the pineapple Habanero hot sauce.

  1. If they still have it, You can buy a bottle of pineapple/habanero sauce at Costco. It goes well with lots of dishes.

    2. I highly recommend any specials they have (availability is unpredictable though). They had a nasu miso taco special last week. I've had some creative ones, like uni and lobster coctele, monkfish taco, and jellyfish tostada.

        I still wanna try the Uni cocktail but it never seems to be on offer when I'm there. Just bad luck I guess.

          One thing you can do to increase the chances of getting a special is call in advance, I would guess around 11:30 or 12: that seems to be when Josh and/or Dan arrive and declare if they will be adding a special. It seems that the special will rarely be ready before 1 PM.

      2. I went there today and had one fish and one shrimp taco and split a cauliflower tostada... NEVER would I thought that I would say that the tostada was my favorite thing today. The pineapple habanero salsa is unbelievably good.

        Though I do not think I could go in there without having a fish or shrimp taco too.

        Nice people there!!

                      Second this. The whole thing makes little sense on paper. But it's so damn good!

                      TPC is special, even without the specials.

                1. I used a Groupon today at Best Fish Taco in Ensenada on Hillhurst. Had 4 shrimp tacos, one fish, and one potato. Potato, which was supposed to have chipotle and cheese, was bland in texture and flavor. Fail. All the others were good. Shrimp tacos had a bit of crunch and a lot of plump. Fish taco was delicate. Added a lot of spicy salsas and tapatio -- could have used more spice, like a habanero or more chipotle.

                    This is a Public Service Announcement!

                    nosh's post has absolutely NOTHING to do with Tacos Puntas Cabras (despite the title of this thread). If you are interested in thoughts about Best Fish Tacos in Ensenada (which is not in Ensenada, and doesn't have "great" tacos of any sort, IMHO) go ahead and read it. But, if you are interested in great fish tacos/tostadas read, gr8pimpin's (and others') post about TPC in Santa Monica.

                          Hi Kevin, Thanks for asking. My work sent me to the delta of Arkansas in February. I truly enjoyed the culinary culture of Los Angeles and now I'm back to my roots of BBQ, tamales, wild game and garden veggies. I truly miss the post from Chownd LA, it's just too spread out in the south to a good thread going and I recently check in here for old times sake. DOM, and such. I continue to have friends and colleagues from LA call me and ask where and what to eat in LA, because of Chownd, just awesome

                                Let's not feel too bad for the k (f?) man. After all, he's still taking down copious quantities of Shunji's offerings and hitting up Oki dog for a 100 megaton nuclear gut bomb. He just can't write about it here. Hey, maybe this will be the impetus that kevin needed to launch that food blog he's been contemplating for lo these many months (years?).

                          2. Just got back from there. Did not order the cauliflower despite how good they are. Went with the classics, two tacos (fish, shrimp), one mixto tostada (shrimp & scallops).

                            According to Foursquare I haven't been back in a year, but I may have forgotten to check in on a more recent visit. However, I'm pretty sure I haven't been in 2014, and with this thread bump, I figure I should pay them another visit. Plus I won't be able to get my fix at Tacolandia.

                            Tacos were excellent as before. They started using firmer fish already last year (one of my only criticisms early was the texture of the fish), still with the light tempura batter. Shrimp tacos are now market price and a bit pricey at $5/taco but it came with three fairly large shrimp.

                            My favorite is still the mixto tostada with fresh scallops and shrimp, sweet pickles, pico de gallo, and the amazing cashew salsa!

                              Yessir. That's an excellent tostada and I can't get out of that place without ordering one.

                                The lobster ones with the cumin sauce are exceptional. But at 7 bucks a pop .... You get the proverbial picture.

                                    I think I asked once and they told me what kind of fish they were using and what they switched to but I can't remember.

                                    So according to the guy at the counter last night, they bowed out of Tacolandia for two reasons. One, Chef Daniel's been laid up due to knee surgery. Two, they are catering a big event the night before (at the Mexican consulate if I heard correctly).

                                  3. All this taco porn on chowhounds got us to go here today...first time...short answer: I loved it. Terrific shrimp cocktail, I drank the juice at end. And the fried seafood tacos were a hit. I agree with CK about that pineapple habanero sauce...nice folks working there that wanted to be sure we enjoyed ourselves and we did. only things missing: corona, a beach chair and a siesta.

                                    This is another good find that I wouldn't have known about except for the chowhounds so bravo!

                                      Glad you liked it. I do too. If you'd re-read the TCB posts really carefully, you might've seen the suggestion to bring your own cerveza and thus you coulda' had your Corona.

                                          definitely. my buddy had one ... looked like the cocktail but on the big chip.

                                      2. Tried this today again for the first time in a while. The two tostadas I had (cauliflower and scallop) were both excellent. The tacos were...okay. Not even remotely in the league of Ricky's. I'd go back for the tostadas.

                                            Yep. Went with my sister today, we got two tacos and a tostada each, two diet cokes, and a chips with salsa. $35. Felt very expensive.

                                        2. Today's special tostada: smoked salmon, Kumamoto oysters, ikura, avocado. Looks amazing. Tastes even better. $10 or $11. Not cheap, but you're getting at least two oysters, salmon, and salmon roe.
