Price of Lemons - absurd!

  • 9

Does anyone know why the price of lemons has surged over recent months? Bad enough when they were 75-80 cents a piece. Then they stayed the same price but a much smaller, less juicy variety appeared with pockmarked rather than smooth yellow skin. Now they've gone up to $1.21+ EACH - same inferior "count" and quality - with Loblaw's typically having the nerve to post (save! 21 cents off) so preparing us, I am guessing, from a theoretical further price rise to $1.50

What gives? pestilence? price gouging? supine consumers allowing new profit centre?

  1. Even Chinatown is pricey - 2 for $1.00. I usually like lemon in my water but have bought more limes lately.

    1. Due to frost in Chile and Argentina.

Highland Farms had them on for $1.99/lb last week. Metro had a 2lb bag from Argentina for $3.99 yesterday vs $1 each for organic.
I've been using more limes, they're cheap now.

      1. oceans has 2lb bag of lemons for $1.99 so i would say stop shopping at Roblaws.

        1. I've seen them at Loblaws for $1.50 each for a couple of weeks now !
          Costco - 5 lbs - $5.99
Also useful at Costco is some 'Scilian Volcano' Lemon Juice which is not bad in some applications.
My grocery source says the switch to US sources of lemons is in the next two weeks so prices should drop then.

          1. If you are looking for Meyer lemons, I've seen them recently for around $3 for a bag of 5 at the fruit stores near Danforth and Logan.

            1. Wait for the big US crop to arrive in about a month or so.

Thems the breaks...My NoFrills had 'em @ $3/5 this a.m. Average size, OK quality.

              2. Here's an article with lots of information on the lime shortage.
