tortilla soup, enchiladas suizas and chiles rellenos

  • 8

Does anyone have recs for good versions around TO? Seems most Mexican places are very taco-centric lately. I've ordered several enchiladas from Milagro, so I'm aware that they serve them, but I can't think of too many other places serving good versions.

Doesn't bother me if the restaurant is more Tex-Mex than Mexican.
Thanks for any ideas.

  1. I really enjoy the chile rellenos at Playa Cabana. I've had them several times at the Junction location and they've always been delicious.

    1. I grew up with a mom from Texas, and cheese enchiladas were a regular dinner in our household. Also lived in Dallas for work for a bit, used to get tex mex about once a week.

When in need of a cheese enchilada fix in Toronto, I go to Fernando's around Yonge and Wellesley for the Enchiladas del Norte. It's definitely on par with places like El Fenix and their enchilada special on Wednesdays. It also reminds me of what my mom used to make. I do make them myself occasionally but it's a bit of a hassle to get good corn tortillas downtown.

I was just there on Friday and they are moving to a new location a bit north of Wellesley next month.

      1. La Rincon on St. Clair West has good tortilla soup.

I'm not sure about the rellenos and tortilla soup, and can't find the menu online to verify, but I can say that if you are looking for a comforting Mexican (non hipster) experience, Valentina's on Bellevue in Kensington is probably one of the best experiences going. Top quality ingredients, amazing preparations and sauces, and pricing in keeping with the area. I have feasted with other hungry and thirsty people and it is difficult to walk out for over 50$ a head including tip. Rabbit tacos in chocolate sauce are really good, as are the pork with achiote and pickled onion. Very good pozole.

Do they actually call it "Chocolate Sauce" instead of Mole? That would be a massive red flag in my opinion....

Xola in the Beaches does a very nice Chile Relleno. I have heard that El Rincon on St. Clair has a very good tortilla soup, but I haven't tried it personally.

Thanks for the Xola rec. I'll have to try it next time I'm in the Beaches. Happy to see they offer tamales, as well.
