Need a fun night Eastside or DTLA/ I'm all over the place!

Group of 5 close friends, women. Tuesday for a Birthday. We need a couple of fun places to celebrate. We like an Adventure/ Crawl, 1-3 places in our night. We love the Blairs, Everleigh & Bestia. The vibe and Decor is VERY important. We are thinking of a speakeasy or wine bar in DTLA, for a dringk then maybe Perch, Baco Mircat? Not interested in Rivera and we need options other than seafood. Would Perch work for their Bar and then Baco Mircat for dinner. Also considering Vermont Blvd the Dresdin for a drink but not sure where to eat? I have a reservation at Night + Market but not sure about the pork? I am all over the place. H E L P

I love the idea, we have been to Villains Tavern and Tony's Saloon before. Can you tell me why The Factory Kitchen? As well as another "Drinks" suggestion. Thank you ....

      1. re: Mauve

Just the newness of it really. Be one of the first.

      2. re: JAB

The Factory Kitchen is open starting the 31st of October, I need tomorrow, other ideas?
        Thank you

      3. I think you have a good itinerary here. Can't beat the view from the rooftop bar at Perch (great if you can snag a lounge chair by a fire place), and though lots of people on this board don't love Baco, I do. My other favorite place for a drink nearby is the Varnish, but I always go early so as not to wait for a table just to have one or two drinks.

So at this late hour I an thinking Varnish and or Perch for drinks, and Baco for dinner. I need to see if we can walk this? I have been to Baco and know the food will be fine if we add the drink stops.

          1. re: Mauve

It's certainly walkable. Have a great night out!

          2. re: CLowe

What the FUCK!? People don't like Baco here??

I guess I should stop using these boards... that almost single-handedly invalidates all of the advice on here...

Why don't people like Baco here???

            1. re: Stravinsky

There are plenty of people who do, plenty of people who haven't been who want to go (me included) and apparently plenty of people who dislike it. It's polarizing.

But seriously? "I guess I should stop using these boards... that almost single-handedly invalidates all of the advice on here..."

              1. re: PeterCC

                Yes.

                I'm serious.

If the general opinion here is that Baco Mercat is a bad restaurant, then I cannot take them seriously in anyway.

It would be detrimental to my exploration of restaurants in the future in fact. I couldn't trust anything that was said.

Baco is pretty much a litmus test for me at this point. I've never actually taken someone there and not had them say it was one of the best meals of their life, so it's hard for me to imagine people not enjoying it, but if someone theoretically went, and declared it to be awful, I would consider it grounds for not really dining with them anymore. Maybe ending the friendship...

                I like Baco that much.

You realize that Chowhound is not the Borg. We do not think with one mind or speak with one voice. Resistance is encouraged.

The one comment made it sound like it was unanimously held...

                    1. re: Stravinsky

Um, "lots of people on this board don't love Baco, I do" literally couldn't mean everyone on CH hates Baco, since at least the person making the statement, CLowe, admits s/he does!

In this thread (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/829739), roughly half (I didn't keep exact count but it seems to alternate back and forth) enjoyed and disliked it.

This thread (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/904622) is UNANIMOUSLY... positive!

Take that for what it's worth, but I wouldn't hold these threads up as "proof" that the board loves (or hates) Baco... or anything else for that matter.

                      1. re: PeterCC

                        Agreed.

                      2. re: Stravinsky

I'm aware of many posts on these here board that have vehemently disliked Baco, for what it's worth.

You may now stop posting here and get back to composing. :)

                      That's pretty hardcore, dude.

                      1. re: PeterCC

                        I suppose it is.

                        I am an extremist.

But Baco is also probably the only restaurant I would have said that about.

                        1. re: Stravinsky

Say you have a best friend and you take him to Baco and he hates Baco, would that end the friendship for you ????????

                          Just curious.

Why then I'd know he was a low down, dirty, Commie...and I'd pull out my 9 and bust a cap in his sorry Commie ass...

This is so wrong, it's right!

                              1. re: Servorg

                                hahaha.

                              2. re: kevin

                                Yeah. Probably.

Fortunately my best friend has been to Baco with me many times, and is as fanatical about it as I am.

                            2. re: PeterCC

                              Yep.

This board is all about fucking disputes, disagreements, strongly held divergent opinions and diametrically wavering opinions.

Better get used to it, or get out while you still can.

                            3. re: Stravinsky

                              lol you're hilarious

                              1. re: Stravinsky

I had a decent meal there, and I think the place is fine but not mind blowing..... Best meal of your life? Not sure what that says about you..... But that's okay. That's why we debate here, because we're not clones.....

                                1. re: Dirtywextraolives

                                  What did you order?

                                  1. re: Stravinsky

I had the original baco, the one Thor thinks is fatty & greasy.... I thought it was fine, just wished it had more flavor. I also had an exceptional salad, the one with the sugar snap peas & grapefruit.....it was great. I even replicated it at home to go with my Christmas dinner.....loved the flavors. But I haven't been back since, and now realize the thing to order there is the vegetable dishes.

                                    1. re: Dirtywextraolives

Yes, the vegetable dishes are all insane there. Next time, get the baby beet salad...it's probably the best salad I have ever had in my life. I cannot avoid getting it every time! The carrots are also insane...the eggplant, and cauliflower are also stunners. Broccolini with salsa verde...pretty much all of them haha

Something must have been forgotten from the original... there's 3 different sauces, and two types of beautifully fatty meats in that thing! How could there be MORE flavor?!

Quail on the menu is always awesome, as well as the pork porterhouse, and the honey-saffron chicken (which they only do 1-2 of a night sadly). The waffle rillette, too... mmm

The only thing I was never a super huge fan of there was a lamb steak I had, but everyone else thought it was fantastic. Hmm...

                                      1. re: Stravinsky

I don't know, it just didn't pack enough heat for me..... And basically the flavor was a bit forgettable, as I cannot recall it at all. But they did do a bang up job of frying those cubes of pork belly, very tender and not greasy at all.

                                        1. re: Dirtywextraolives

Well, what level of heat were you looking for? It's really about a nutty, smokey profile as opposed to Thai Town waves of heat, haha.

So weird. The flavor of that baco is one of the most cemented flavors in my taste memory. I crave it often...mmm

                                          1. re: Stravinsky

Guess I like my pork belly sticky, spicy & sweet..... That's how I make it at home. Just braised & deep fried is not deep enough flavor for me.

                                2. re: Stravinsky

"It would be detrimental to my exploration of restaurants in the future in fact. I couldn't trust anything that was said."

I find there are some posters with tastes similar to mine and who's recommendations I actively pursue. Others not so much. It's all a matter of personal taste.

                                  1. re: Stravinsky

I had a truly awful meal at Baco

                                3. re: Stravinsky

The one time I went I had a Baco that was loaded with cubed fat. Found it disgusting. The other dishes were good.

                                  1. re: Thor123

Did you look at the menu?

The Original Baco clearly states that it contains pork belly. It's not "cubed fat" but it's an excessively fatty cut of meat.

Personally, I find it delicious. I wouldn't hold it against a restaurant if you order something you dislike.

                              2. Decor?

Perch for booze, Stocking Frame for food, Baco Mercat for spicy booze (only) to properly stumble home. Skip food there at all cost.

                                  I truly want to know.

I have had more of the best meals of my life at Baco Mercat than I can count at this point...

What have you been eating there??

                                  1. re: Stravinsky

Jeez calm down, you love Baco you are welcome to and there's nothing wrong with that, you are entitled to your own opinion but heck most of my industry folks and chef buddies don't care much for it.

Generalized and aggregate opinions on message boards are generally never accurate as rarely does the entire community participate so don't take a few comments to heart.

Personally I had a fairly mediocre meal there, although I should give it a another try since I know one of the managers there.
