SAN ANTONIO BBQ

I am coming to San Antonio on business next month. Recently I saw a PBS Cooking show that featured a place called Fay Willie's BBQ that sounded fab. I googled it, obtained an address (119 Heiman St.) and a phone #, but the phone # is a residence. Is the place still in business? Would you recommend it? Is there another place near the Riverwalk that has now eclipsed it?

I have heard City Market in Luling and Kreuz's and the others in Lockhart are very good.Harmon's in Cibolo,Tx. east of San Antonio is good.Had one day their smoked catfish.I was very surprised by it.It wasn't dried out and the smoke flavour didn't overpower the fish was nice.Gets alot of people from Randolph AFBase at lunch.Best way to go would be I guess get on I -35 North and get off at Kirby exit then take Farm Road 78 all the way out to Cibolo. You make a left and go down till you see the light by the Church of Christ.Make a left on Main Street and it's on your right hand side.
Another place is Texas Pride BBQ out on Loop 1604 near St.Hedwig.They have in the summer Friday Night Fish Frys with live music in the summer.Harmon's also has music on either Friday or Saturday. And both have websites.

They now have a Harmon's in downtown SA. I think it's near the alamo, but I'm not sure.

And for MY money, I'd rent a car and make the short drive over to Luling and City Market. Why not go to one of the top five places for barbecue on the planet?

It will only take you between 30 to 50 minutes, depending upon where in San Antonio you are. And nothing in San Antonio proper is even in the same league.

I have to agree with this. It's really night and day in trems of quality. It would be a real shame if your only impression of texas bbq is in San Antonio when Lockhart (which I think is better than Luling and just as far) is so close.

Rent a car. It will be well worth the time and effort.

For my money, Casey's Bar-b-Que on North 281 is hand's down the best

Casey's went out of business a long time ago. It is now Grady's Bar-B-Q.

From what i understand, Fay Willie's is no longer there. The place i would highly suggest is Bob's Smokehouse at 5145 Fredericksburg Rd, San Antonio, Tx 78229, 210-344-8401. It's not on the riverwalk, it's in Medical Center area and some mighty fine barbeque indeed. It's family owned and operated by Bob's brother now, Bob passed some years ago. I remember Fay Willie's was located by Sunset Station downtown, but that was years and years ago.
