      Hey, now or never, right?

      Go p&w!

Since November will include Thanksgiving/Hanukah, and I think that turkey, cranberry sauce, and latkes will go great together:

        PANCAKES & WAFFLES.

                          1. Is "soup" going to turn into another Ramen thread?

No Asian versions of soup. Ramen can have its own nomination.

                                But, that'd be...

                                1. re: bringiton

What about hot & sour, miso, jjigae, tom yum, etc.?

                                  1. re: PeterCC

Let's just say that "soup" can be any dish where you get to slurp, drink, suck, or spoon-feed yourself some sort of broth or liquid.

If a person wants to get ridiculous and count "chili fries" as soup simply because they can slurp up the chili oil drippings then so be it. They can answer to the Chowhound-gods at damnation time when asked to answer for why they bastardized the DotM.

                                    1. re: ipsedixit

Didn't see any objection to Beachowolfe's and bringiton's objections to ramen (except JAB), so I wanted to get clarification if soup did win. Thanks.

                                      1. re: PeterCC

Like I said, limit the starch component to less than 50%. That eliminates ramens and noodle soups without eliminating certain cuisines.

                                        1. re: Porthos

By that definition, matzo ball soup shouldn't count either - but why not? I don't see us doing a standalone Matzo Ball Soup DOTM!

                                          1. re: aching

You do have a good point there.

Then I got nothing to prevent ramen and beef noodle soup from taking over soup DOM if it does become DOM. Sure as heck not going down the wacist woute.

                                            1. re: Porthos

This is just for fun, after all. It doesn't have to meet any academic or scientific rigor. So, if it encourages people to go out and try soups and report back, and if said soups happen to be ramen, it's more fodder for the boards and can only be a positive (famous last words)!

                                              1. re: Porthos

                                                Seriously.

What about shabu-shabu or Chinese/Taiwanese hot pot?

Less than 50% starch, but certainly more percentage of solid items (veggies, tofu, meats, etc.) than actual broth -- sometimes anyway.

                                                1. re: ipsedixit

That's why I used starch as a cutoff but criteria was voided with matzoh ball soup.

A hearty soup in any cuisine can certainly be less than 50% liquid.

                                    2. re: bringiton

so chicken noodle is cool but chicken ramen is not? dass wacist.

I disagree with the direction of your soup categorization!

Now that we have done a neighborhood of the month (NOTM), maybe we do a Restaurant of the Month (ROTM) someday?

Restaurant of the month would be fucking awesome.

                                              Shunji's perhaps, Bob ?????

                                                Now that could prove interesting.

                                                1. re: Ciao Bob

                                                  No.

It's too susceptible to ballot-stuffing by the restaurant.

                                                  1. re: ipsedixit

FPotM (Food Philosophy of the Month)? Vegan, vegetarian, ovo-lacto vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free, kosher, halal, etc...

                                                    1. re: PeterCC

In all seriousness, aside from shenanigans, a RotM is a bit too exclusive.

Let's say Shunji was selected. Given the budget constraints of many posters, the price point of Shunji would preclude participation. Not a good thing.

A dish, or even an ingredient, poses no such problems -- certainly poses less risk of such problems. If it's noodles, for example, there are $5 bowls of noodles and $50 bowls of noodles, so it sort of lends itself to accommodate all budgets, tastes, etc.

A neighborhood (i.e. Koreatown) is about as parochially focused as we should get on this type of thread without being too elitist -- either in location, price point, or whatever.

In fact, in many ways DOtM should seek to encourage those with limited budgets to explore all that LA (and OC) have to offer, not inhibit those 'Hounds from participating. After all, those with large dining budgets already have a natural impetus to explore and cultivate their culinary intrepid spirit. Hopefully in some small indirect way DotM can nudge those who might have more limited budgets (or other constraints like time or distance) to do likewise.

                                                      1. re: ipsedixit

I agree: I was (mostly) joking, as I (generally) am about ROTM. ROTM unfairly benefits a single place: that is, if it is, indeed, a benefit to have 30 or 40 hounds praising (or dissing) your chow. And ipse's point about access to the community-at-large is sagacious. Still, it would have been a month-long meet and laugh fest.

                                                        1. re: Ciao Bob

It would be fun. Totally agree.

Maybe we can add a spin to it? Like all restaurants that start with (ahem) "S"?

                                                          Just something to ponder ...

I like that idea actually... I'd probably be the one who would try find the oddest named one... like Sassy's Snackaroo Shack....

So what's good at Sassy's Snackaroo Shack?

                                                              Do they have Scooby Snacks?

Why not just go through the alphabet, starting with "A"?

Married a Bruin, which is how I know the 8-clap. Kids too. Already indoctrinated.

I think it was in the Providence dim sum thread where you mentioned "grad school classmates from Brown" which I interpreted as "classmates at Brown, where I went to grad school" rather than "classmates at my grad school who went to Brown [for undergrad]".

One distinction I read on Wikipedia is that a stew is thick enough to be able to be served in something other than a bowl, like on a plate.

                                                                                      1. re: Dommy

Lets put it this way, do *you* consider it soup?

If yes, then by all means post it.

The last thing I think the Soup DotM thread should de-evolve into is a circular logomachy into what is or is not "soup".

If you eat a slice of pizza and slurp up the grease and oil and consider that "soup" then more power to it. Only you will have to look yourself in the mirror the next day and say, "Yes, I ate pizza, then posted it on the Dish of the Month Soup thread and called it 'soup'" ... If you're ok with that, go for it!

                                                                                        1. re: ipsedixit

                                                                                          1. re: PeterCC

Wait a minute! You have something here. Tomato soup, maybe still a bit chunky with chopped tomato and onion. A crispy crouton of some sort. Topped with a melty provolone or mozzarella with some parmesan. Put some crispy chunks of pepperoni or sausage on top of the cheese layer. Brown everything in the broiler.

                                                                                              This could be GREAT!
