Babur Garden - Ocean, NJ
There's a fairly new Afghan restaurant in Ocean. My husband and I have been three times for dinner over the past few months.
It's an exotic place for this part of New Jersey. There is not a whole lot of ethnic variety in restaurants in the area, despite the fact that there are many ethnicities represented in the area. So, were curious about this place.
The restaurant is a large space with rugs and costumes hanging on the walls. There are 2 monitors which play slide shows of stunningly beautiful pictures of Afghanistan. The servers are mostly local youth (young people?).
We've tried several dishes: Zamarood Palaw, Lamb Shank, Kobeeda Kabob, the Buranee Kadu (fried pumpkin appetizer), and a couple of specials they have offered. The Buranee Kadu is, by far, the best thing we've had. Different. Tasty. The entrees are good - each entry comes with a pile of rice of which there are many kinds to choose from.
While the food is well-prepared, and pretty good, it seems to lack depth of flavor, which surprises us. Though, we own an Afghan cookbook, and it's obvious from looking at the book that the food is not heavily spiced. Still, I wish the restaurant cooking had a little more depth.
There are always at least 20 or 30 other people there when we go, so they seem to be gathering a following. I'm really happy to see that. I like the fact that this restaurant exists in this part of New Jersey.
I'm curious to know what others think of this place.
