Dumpling House in Davis, yum!
I had a late lunch in Davis on Tuesday at the Dumpling House. I only tried the seafood and pork dumplings and the fried chive flat bread. I wanted to order more but, I was attending a concert at Mondavi and didn't have a cooler to bring home extra dumplings or leftovers. The flat bread was meh, it was more grilled than fried. OTOH, the dumplings really satisfied my craving. The filling of the dumpling was excellent. For my personal taste it didn't need much or any sauce. It had a nice zing of ginger. I used to make my own dumplings and pot stickers so I really appreciated the flavor of the dumpling. They used smaller shrimp,I have had dumplings elsewhere with larger cut up shrimp; however, in the long run I don't think it made a big difference. The wrapper was a pretty standard store bought dumpling wrapper, again not a deal breaker to wanting to try their other offerings. I read somewhere that they sell bulk dumplings too.

I've made a few visits to the Dumpling House since moving to Davis a few months ago. The pork and chive dumplings (steamed) were my favorite. The vegetable dumplings were bland; the chicken dumplings with corn were OK. The broccoli and mustard green side dishes were extremely salty, on the verge of inedible. The string beans were the best (least salty) of the vegetable dishes. I'll give the seafood dumplings a try next time.
They also serve fish and chips and deep fried foods. I haven't gone that route yet.
Casual, kinda grubby, atmosphere. But I'm sure I'll return when family visits. I'm curious about Davis Noodle City housed in the same courtyard complex.
I haven't explored the food scene much in Davis. The thrifty lifestyle of a student means primarily home cooking :-)
