Dinner at fundamental LA

Ciao Bob Oct 24, 2013 03:29 PM

Went for dins last PM.
Previously, I have only had sandwiches there (for lunch), dinner is a whole other ballgame.

Brussels Sprouts -Tom Yum Glaze (better than Cleo or Red Medicine)
Charred Broccoli & Lentils - garbanzo, tamarind, walnut, golden raisin
Striped Bass - rancho gordo beans, kale, rosemary, mushroom broth
Carrot Risotto - carrot butter, mint, manchego, shaved baby carrot

All very, very good.
Good value and an interesting and well-priced wine list.
Very nice staff.

I would say it is quiet, user-friendly Gjelina (but no pizza).

I thought it was a pretty small sandwich joint?

I liked the one dinner I had at Fundamental too. That carrot risotto has been there since day one, for good reason. Haven't had this version of their brussels sprouts yet - it used to be charred & w/ capers I think.

Thor123 - lunch is sandies and salads, dinner is more modern bistro. It seems small for the huge lunch crowds but alot bigger for the small dinner crowd ;)

chrishei - Loved that carrot dish. And the "Rancho Gordo" beans with the bass were great. Glad you liked it too.

I do not throw around Gjelina-similes lightly; the creative cooking and flavors and, especially, the excellent use of vegetables reminds me very much of Gj on AK.

Here is their very nice dinner menu. They do a tasting menu (3 savory + dessert) $35 and wine pairing (three 2 oz. pours) $15,

Did they always have dinner service? For some reason, i thought it was just lunch.

Tasting menu sounds like a pretty good value. It's easier for me to get their on a weekend evening, so I might be trying it soon. No pizza is not a big deal since I can walk off part of the meal to go to 800 Deg....

            Totally agree.
