Whisky Advent Calendar

http://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/... This looks fun although with absolutely no specifics about what's in there, and another, pricier calendar http://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/... available (making me wonder if the base model is a lot of dreck), I'll probably pass on it.

  1. I am more interested in their Ginvent calendar, but for the same reasons (no specifics) I'm giving it a miss

And that one also has the "Craft Ginvent calendar", in that case it's only $17 more. Seems silly to me to differentiate like that when there's not much of a price difference, because again, with no specifics, I'd assume the worst about the lower tier.

The calendar is in association with the Gin Foundry (ex Gin Blog). Just came across the details for the 2011 and 2012 calendar

And here are some highlights from last year's whisky calendar

      2. Lol. Y'all really need to scroll down a bit, both the basic whisky and the gin samplers give the brand names if you click "Read more". :)

I was intrigued by these last year but deferred; cost seemed out of proportion to enjoyment. This year, I'm going to do "Twelve Nights of Christmas" for the Duke and his best buddy. I have plenty of 1.7 oz bottles (specialtybottle.com); I'll fill them with a selection of the bourbons I've been infusing (figs, apples, apricots, etc.) and the 'back catalog' from our Scotch shelf (little-used bottles). I'll get a couple of inexpensive hinged boxes and cut some foam. The boys can compare notes nightly via texting.

I'm glad for your post, Chris. I need to get assembling.

          Ha, you're right!

Definitely worth paying the extra for the craft gin calendar. Quite a selection

I'm pretty sure that wasn't there yesterday, or maybe the thought that Christmas is this close had me in too much of a panic to read closely! Glad to see it... although I'd rather buy one from you, sounds fantastic :)

Quite likely they updated (prob secondary to a deluge of WTF! emails lol), was kinda surprised that you both seemed to have missed the listings.

I'm excited, the infused bourbons this year seem a bit more refined than my first attempts from last year. I might need to find a space for the vodka with Indian chilies that's been infusing 10 months or so, Duke's buddy is a hothead.

              Sounds a lovely idea.
The missus brought me 21 ,5cl bottles of malt of Friday.(she's a food and wine buyer) was planning a calendar but the FIL has come over and I've only got 15 days covered now!

            3. Seems expensive for one ounce sample of each.

Definitely expensive... you're paying for the ease and convenience of a gift for "the person who has everything".

You're also paying for the unique opportunity in getting to sample a large, diverse range of drinks. As a gin nut, this would be a much more expensive affair ordering throughout the bars of London, not to mention the difficulty in finding all these brands available.

For maximum benefit, I think it would be worth blind tasting them
