Best chocolate milkshake near Sherman Oaks?

The only request my husband has for his birthday is that I find him an insanely rich chocolate milkshake while we are on vacation in a couple of weeks. We will be visiting my mom in Sherman Oaks, and while I know I could make him one, he wants to go out with our kids for a special treat. Any suggestions? We are also going to be by LAX that afternoon, and going towards Malibu that evening, so we could drive in any of those directions.

Thanks!

  1. Right near LAX is Pann's an original 1950's diner (“Googie” style architecture allows both Angelinos and travelers an original fifty's experience) and they have great rich milkshakes and Patty Melts.

Also in the Santa Monica and Brentwood (2 locations) I recommended Sweet Rose Creamery (they make their own wonderful ice-cream and original flavors).

In Malibu try Grom, Milkshakes made with real Italian gelato.

another good source for milkshakes made with gelato that is located near LAX (between LAX and malibu) is:

      Gelato Lounge
      4724 lincoln blvd
      marina del rey ca 90292

      310-822-1404

keep in mind, that if what you mean by "rich" is "fatty," probably gelato won't do the trick since gelato is made using milk rather than high fat content cream.

that said, if what you mean by "rich" means incredible, intense, chocolate flavor from using a lot of high quality cocoa, you will do very well by getting a shake made with the chocolate sorbetto at the Gelato Lounge.

be sure to call before you go to make sure they are serving the chocolate sorbetto that day as they rotate their flavors.

WG, I'm not a religious guy but you have made a fucking convert out of me on GL.

And one more thing both the husband and wife are super friendly.

        My bad.

I didn't read the rest of your post.

        Yes, Pann's is great.

So is Lucky Devil's for a custardy milkshake in H'wd as well as those at 25 Degrees.

oh yeah, for the custard stuff top round or pier burger...richer than a shake...quite choice.

      3. Happy B-day to your hubby. During your stay in So Cal might I suggest picking up a glass bottle of Broguiere's Farm Fresh Dairy's chocolate milk. It is insanely rich good stuff.
It is available in most supermarkets.
(Broguiere's holiday eggnog should be arriving soon!)

        1. Cafe 50s on Ventura, near Kester.

That Cafe 50s location looked closed when I went by last year. So they might call to see. There is still Mel's Drive-In very close by.

              Oh, shit.

yeah, it always looked pretty empty when i drove by there.

Not sure why they couldn't make a go of it. The location was good. who knows.

It's now the second branch of Blue Jam and they're doing great business. Weekend brunch has twenty people waiting for a table.

          2. call me crazy but i think the shakes at baskin robbins or carvel are quite nice.

for insanely rich, and you can get a malted chocolate too, try milk on beverly blvd near la brea.

respectfully disagree with the recommendation of baskin robbins.

            2. Beeps has the best milkshakes and you can sit outside......near Van Nuys airport. Banana chocolate is amazing!

Yes and I can recommend the pastrami. I love that place too.

Beeps http://www.beepsdiner.com/ is just the kind of place I love. Only wished they opener earlier on Sudays.

That's it. That's the place I was referencing. It looks like its still firmly ensconced in the mid 1950s, just the way I like it.
