Homemade blends or can two wrongs make a right
Surveying my liquor cabinet, I had four to five rums that I rarely use. Most are decent enough but don't prompt me to imbibe them often.
So I thought I would combine several of them to see if they would improve as a whole. I combined 1/4 cup of the following: flor de cana 4 yr, Brugal Anejo, abuelo 7 yr, St. James extra old(mainly used for Mai Tais). I added 1/8 cup Sea Wynde. I thought its higher proof would help the blend as a whole and that its tarry phenols would simultaneously be tamed and bring some oomph to the blend.
after mellowing together for a few days the blend is quite interesting. Not sure if I like it or not yet but it is a definite improvement. After a few more tastings and some cocktails made, I will have a better handle on it.
I am thinking of adding two rums that are highly rated by others but are a miss for me. These are Doorly's XO and English Harbour 5. If added I will try it on a per drink basis at first.
Has any one else tried there own home blends of rum or whiskey? If so what were your results? What worked and what didn't? Any tips would be appreciated.
