Los Angeles Dish of the Month (November 2013) - Nominations

Los Angeles Dish of the Month (November 2013) - Nominations

The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for the LA area and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible during the month of November reporting back with details and photos. It's great to talk about places you've been in the past, but the idea is to explore new places and make new discoveries.

The dish that gets chosen four our One Year Anniversary might be something very specific (Walleye tuna fish maw) but might also be more of a dish category (Venus cockroaches). It's up to everyone here, but it probably makes sense to choose something that locals are excited about trying and finding the best and most interesting versions!

Some ideas off the top of my head to perhaps get the juices flowing:

Anyway, this is the nomination thread for November 2013…you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread (which will start on October 27), it will be one vote per user.

To nominate a dish, please (please!) post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until 11:59 PM PT on October 26th.

      1. re: Juji

you know, I originally voted for this BUT...none of us will actually eat any of the thanksgiving dinner items until 11/25 or so.

      2. Here I go again...

        1. LIVER

In all its levels of ambiguity: fish, fowl, beef, whatever.

          1. SOUP (especially wonton soup).

                        1. That's a no brainer:

                          pumpkin all the way.

Because you forgot to vote for soup, right?

                                  1. re: OCSteve

i'm still bitter about that crushing defeat for ice cream related products, so I'm tempted to vote for that again.

                                    1. re: ns1

I feel your pain. I'm still not over the shellfish defeat.

Oh well, time (and shellfish and soup and ice cream) heals all wounds.

                                      1. re: OCSteve

                                        Shellfish soup?

I'll get your back on soup this month. It's safe to say it's made it pass the nom thread.

                                        1. re: Porthos

I can't wait for Boullibaise (sp?) month.

                                          1. re: Porthos

Thanks! First bowl is on me if it wins, Porthos.

                                            1. re: OCSteve

Casa Inka. Chupe camarones. Shellfish + Soup. Boom.

                                  2. does ramen/similar products constitute as soup? because if it doesn't, then does chicken noodle constitute as soup?

                                      That's interesting.

I think for purposes of the nomination thread, sure.

Why not, right? I mean, as long as everyone knows going in what counts as soup, it's fair game.

                                      1. re: ns1

I think starch component should be less than 50% or it'll quickly turn to noodle soup instead of just soup.

                                        1. re: Porthos

Will you share your "starch-o-meter" with the rest of us?

                                          1. re: ipsedixit

Common sense? Pretty sure everyone already has one.

For example ramen, beef noodle soup, pho, etc may be more of a noodle dish than a soup dish. Zosui, chazuke, congee probably more rice dishes than soups.

But if there is a little pasta or rice or barley in soup along with carrots or potatoes in a broth, that's probably going to be considered soup by most people. If a short rib soup has a bit of glass noodles in it, probably still considered soup.

Chupe camarones has a good amount of rice in it but probably more 20-30 percent and not 50% or more.

The tougher distinction is probably stew vs soup.

Or if you prefer, anything with soup in it for an all out soup melee.

You planning on coming out to the west coast, V?

Or are you going to tele-hound it?

                                          1. re: ipsedixit

You have curiously become familiar with the lay of the land in Manhattan, but I could use a road trip to the left coast and a hot meal.

                                            1. re: Veggo

These days, for better or worse, I probaby spend as much time on the right coast, as I do on the left.

And, are you stalking me, V? Do I need a restraining order ...

No, you need a good recipe for cioppino, and let me use some of your frequent flier miles so we can break bread...
I do follow the boards of places where I have lived and visit, which is almost too many.

This is Mr. Cigars, if I remember correctly ????

I thought cioppino is the pride and joy of are brethren up North.

Definitely! Does SoCal have a local Dungeness crab season?

                                                  2. re: ipsedixit

ipse(factor) :), I'm sure you know that cioppino is an SF dish. With the season coming up and our being in Marin County we'll certainly order or make it.
