Survey: Do You Prefer the Egg White or the Egg Yolk Portion?

I have recently read several posts about egg white. This got me thinking of a simple question.

When you eat your eggs (fried eggs, poached eggs, soft boiled eggs...etc), do you enjoy the egg white portion more or the egg yolk portion more?

1) Egg White
2) About the same (no clear preference)
3) Egg Yolk

Thanks for your inputs.

Holy crap. You are fast (in responding)

      1. I prefer the whites generally unless the yolk is runny and oozy and there is buttered toast close by. Num num

Basically this. Hard yolk or runny white makes me gag. I prefer them eaten together anyway.

          1. Please, Dear Fuser, forgive me, I still love you, but, I wanna try:

            Oh, Egg, so rewarding
            Your soft, virgin white
            Protein rich, flavorless
            Do your job , protect
            That glorious, yellow soul
            That fatty, wonderful core
            That magnificent, magical love
            Put your strong back against
            Her soft, supple pillow
Firm yourself proudly, and let her
            Offer bulbous bliss
            Offer tender milkiness
Offer her pleasure to each of us
Let us revel in the ooze of the Sun
            The affirmation of the Galaxy
            The infinity of the Universe

Um, I guess I should note, to assuage any confusion, I'm a yolk guy.

I love the yolk for it's deliciousness and the white for it's protein punch. Alas, I love them together but I usually eat one whole egg w/ added whites for extra protein.

                1. re: MGZ

I probably should have had a separate category just for your love.

                  1. re: Chemicalkinetics

Aww, CK, if life ever was without love, even this crusty, dirty, ol' 'hound couldn't eat. Sad as that might be to consider, the fundamental notion that you posited in the OP simply proves that even when a drunken, hungry, grayin' mutt like me passes on to the endless bowl of kibbles and pigs ears in the sky, there will still be wonder and magic growin' from the piles I left in the yard.

                  2. re: MGZ

So sad. Somehow I missed FoodFuser's passing news. Love the guy. (No wonder I have not seen him for a long time).

Yes, I prefer them both together. A runny yolk is divine but I love it with firmly cooked white. Give a me pizza bismarck and I am a happy gal.

                      1. re: GH1618

Agree. I like the whole package. So 2.

                        1. re: GH1618

That is a good point. I suspect that most of us who love runny yolks fail to appreciate how the bland whites are the perfect foil the richness of the yolk.

                          1. re: GH1618

I land here, too. The Libra comes out in me: balance and proportion. (Not that those virtues apply in much else in my life!)

                              1. Hands down my heart belongs to the yolk. However, I need lots of protein and watch my calories so I typically supplement my one egg w/ extra whites. But yes, egg yolks, oh how I love thee. <sigh>

                                1. If it's just eggs, I want the whole package. If it's eggs as an ingredient, it depends on what I'm making, of course. Why do you ask?

                                  1. Back in the days of my youth, a hard-boiled yolk was something I could tolerate only if mixed with enough mayonnaise. I am so glad to have gotten over that, but I still need some salt. Now my preference, if the egg is eaten by itself, is for a firm but still-transparent yolk and firm whites. If the yolk is runny I need some carbs to soak it in - toast, potatoes or both. So I guess my preference still leans slightly towards the white, though I'll always want the yolk in there too.

                                        1. A Quick Update. Egg Yolk is leading with ~60% of the votes. Thanks.

Actually, I don't like any of the choices. Believing that they should only be eaten together is not the same as saying I like them equally well.

                                                  1. It depends -

I enjoy a nice runny fried or poached egg yolk but also really enjoy egg whites in boiled, frittata or scrambled form.

                                                    1. 2 ...for the different texture and mouth feel---each are interesting.

                                                      1. I absolutely love yolk from a good egg. Love it. But it is tough to imagine it without the white. When I fry an egg Spanish style? That white is extraordinary.

                                                          1. Depends on the dish, but usually both, such as with Grits & Eggs. Would not want to miss either there.

                                                            Hunt

                                                            1. If I have to: 3. No question. I love the whole, but the yolk is something *plus.*

                                                              1. They work well together but if I were to eat one without the other it would definitely be the yolk. No question at all.

                                                                1. Can I choose "4"?

I was going to select "2" but as I thought about it that choice was just not accurate.

In fact, "2" in many ways just wrong. It's not that I have no preference; rather, on the contrary I have a strong preference for both simultaneously.

If I'm cooking an egg just to eat on its own (as opposed to incorporated into a recipe either as a whole like cakes or individually like custard or meringues) I have to have both the yolk and the white.

For example, no way would I want scrambled eggs with just the yolk (yuck) or munch on a plate of just fried egg whites (ick).

                                                                  1. Thanks. The results are starting to converge

                                                                            1. 2 for me...I can enjoy the yolks and whites separately, but much prefer them together in almost any form.

I do like omelets made with egg white though (and not for any fad diet reason...egg white w feta & spinach is a particular fave).

                                                                              1. This thread is making me a bit sad about asparagus season being so far off. Right now I really just want to dip a piece of asparagus into a perfect yolk.

                                                                                1. 3, definitely the yolk. I prefer an oozing over easy yolk in the morning over egg whites. I definitely prefer a custard to a meringue.

                                                                                  1. Thanks again for your inputs.
