Mystery Birria place from recent NYTimes article - any ideas?
Article on 10.18.
My guess would be Birrieria de Don Boni, in Boyle Heights:
1) It's on the map (under its previous name of Birrieria Jalisco)
2) It recently changed its name
3) It's east of downtown
4) It's been around for 40 years and is perpetually packed
I haven't been there in a few years, but it used to be one of my favorites when I lived in LA!
I did some digging -- Googled "birrieria east la recent name change" -- and came up with the same place. That's gotta be it!
Yet you said there was a name change -- and I found a Birrieria Jalisco in Lynwood on E Imperial Hwy...
Nice sleuthing, everybody.
Regardless of whether the deduction is correct or not, that's good work -- and that's a pretty fun article, too.
Yeah, I'm 99% certain it's Birrieria de Don Boni.
That place has been run by the same family since 1972 and back in August one of the original owners passed away and they changed it from Birrieria Jalisco to Don Boni in his honor.
It's a really good restaurant and a well-deserved Boyle Heights institution, but I think the NYT author insinuating that he found some unknown place is bit misleading. Birrieria Jalisco has been all over the LA boards for some time.
Seems like this is another case of the NYT being a little presumptuous about LA Mexican food (see the taco article from a few weeks ago).
