Penang - Hawker Favourites at Ho Ping Coffeeshop
Hawker food brunch at Ho Ping Coffeeshop on Penang Road this morning:
- Mee Goreng, a spicy Indian-Muslim stir-fried noodle dish, with beansprouts, slivers of "vadai" (Indian fritters), tofu and eggs.
- Beef "koay teow": blanched flat rice noodles topped with minced beef, dark soysauce & sesame oil dressing, and served with a light beef soup with beef balls. Very tasty.
- Penang "char koay teow": stir-fried flat rice noodles, beansprouts, shrimps, cockles, sliced Chinese waxed sausages, egg & chives, flavoured with light soysauce. The version here has the requisite "wok hei" aroma, but slightly bland to taste.
Ho Ping Coffee Shop
Intersection of Lorong Kampung Malabar & Penang Road
The best stall here is the lor bak stall. But the people who run this will sell their food at another coffeeshop just down the road on Kampung Malabar Lane in the morning and onlymove into Ho Ping at lunch time.
The most famous stall was of course the bak moi/pork porridge but it's now got its own restaurant two doors away.
Ho Ping has removed their old booth seats to make more space for customers. The beef balls and beef noodles are still the best.
