Fish sauce

Can anyone recommend a good fish sauce from T&T supermarket? There are so many choices but I hear they're not all safe.

    1. I dunno about safe but for me the tastiest one is the one with the big ol' squid on the bottle. Though I often agree with Sam, I must say that Golden Boy is the only fish sauce I really didn't enjoy. I found it tasted more salty than fishy. Maybe I just got a bad bottle.

Funny, cuz my bottles of Golden Boy have always tasted overly salty to me. I never bothered trying different brands, just kind of assumed they're all the same.

I've tried about five brands. They taste different to me. I bought the Golden Boy because it was one of the few available in a smaller bottle and I was thinking that might be convenient. Found it thinner and less "umami" ish than the Squid brand, with an overwhelming taste of just salt. I use fish sauce to make a faux Caesar dressing so I gotta have the anchovy taste coming through :-).

      2. Our favourite is Viet Hu'o'ng Three Crab Fish Sauce. It has a picture of three crabs on the label...a little more expensive but just the right amount of fish/salty flavour.

+1 on the Three Crabs fish sauce. We switched after asking Slanted Door why their nuoc cham was so tasty. It makes a significant difference, I think. If I were going to use a lot, I'd probably buy the squid label one (our previous go-to brand) for cooking, and keep Three Crabs for dipping.

Inspired by the throng of rabid Three Crabs fans here I slouched down to Sunrise Produce and bought a 300ml bottle for $2.99-expensive considering a large bottle of Squid brand was only $2.00.

Speaking of large bottles I realise the reason I stuck with Golden Boy for so long was because it is sold in smaller quantities.

That's why i tried Gboy too! But then I realized that it's almost impossible for fish sauce to go off so a large bottle is okay :-)
