Can you recommend a fine food restaurant for a late lunch/early dinner near West 49th St?

What day of the week? Many upscale restaurants ONLY do weekday lunch.

What time is your late lunch/early dinner? A lot of restaurants stop serving at 2 or 2:30pm and don't start service until 5:30pm.

Try Blue Fin at 47th & Broadway in the heart of Times Square.
They have a seating area up front that serves small bites and drinks and you can watch the world go by in style.

The food at Blue Fin is downright awful.

If you would like to eat fish in an upscale setting on W. 49th St, try Oceana, which is open for lunch until 3pm, serves small bites all through the day, and starts serving dinner at 5pm every day except Sunday, when it starts serving at 4pm. I find the decor rather too corporate-executive, but it is quiet and comfortable, and the fish served is impeccably fresh and cooked with skill and understanding. They also serve meats, pastas, risotti and salads without fish.

The pre-theater $49 menu is worth noting for the OP if a 5pm meal works:
