Chowfind: La Mexicana for lunch, Bathurst St

Lunch special - $10- soup and plate
I know very little about Mexican food and had no desire to learn more. I had gone to a Mexican restaurant under the bridge in Detroit about 20 years ago and it was disgusting and even worse there was far too much of it. I should have known better. It had been enthusiastically recommended by someone Czech who cringed at the thought of eating vegetables. I thought that I had an obligation to try because the guy was my banker.
La Mexicana had a lunch special sign out so I thought, what the heck.
Soup and a plate, $10. The soup was a veg black bean which I chose in preference to the veg veg. Delicious and ample.
The plates were tacos-enchiladas- burritos-flautas-chimichangas -quaesedillas etc. Choice of chicken, beef, veg.
I went veg and had the bean soup and a veg whatever combo.
The food had been made with talent and care. Little touches of things everywhere and good control in the flavouring. Lots to eat. I still don't know much about Mexican food but I thought that what I had was delicious and satisfying. And cheap. Cost was about 50% of the dinner cost.
re: Vinnie Vidimangi
Thanks Vinnie. I wasn't sure if you had gone back to that location or had tried the Thornhill location. I only ask because my mom lives near the Thornhill location and if I were going to try it, that's the one I would try.
Have you tried any other mexican restaurants in the city? Have you been to Grand Electric or Playa Cabana? Because both of those are top notch, with Playa Cabana having the edge.
How long ago?
Your comment surprised me
I called the owner. He said that he had had a lot of trouble with his cooks about two years ago but all that ended, subject of course to the occasional hiccups.
My lunch was beautiful in taste and presentation. No way was it the same food that you experienced. The woman who was cooking would have been a good to excellent cook in any food culture. Maybe not authentically good, but good to excellent.
He also told me that he was opening a kosher Mexican place in a month in the Sobey Plaza (too me, somewhere in Thornill). I wished him luck in dealing with COR.
re: Vinnie Vidimangi
kwass. We are both right. The existing restaurant is being converted.
They are cutting a bit off the operating hours.
air621. Whatever was the problem before, certainly isn't a problem now.
I went veg again for lunch
basket of corn chips and salsa, given a choice of mild, medium and hot
veg veg soup, big bowl
two corn roll things, bit of salad, corn chip bowl of black beans.
The veg soup is good, the black bean puree soup is special.
Cheap, filling, very nice and delicious. $10. Wow! What do you get at McD and the like for $10?
