Mushroom hunting in NJ

I am keep hearing about people going mushroom hunting. Is there such an area in NJ too? I live in Northern NJ...any place I can go to find some delicious mushrooms of all kinds? Or does this require some kind of skill as I can pick some deadly ones.

  1. Monica:

While it's a bit late in the season, New Jersey has great mushroom hunting. If you can't tell the deadly from the delicious, I strongly urge you not to do it alone!

Instead, the New Jersey Mycology Society has trips (called "forays") and classes to get you started.

Best of luck! These are great people to go with.

    1. Definitly get some instruction, there are articles every year about even experienced mushroom hunters dying after picking a deadly one (however hospital reports do not get into the papers).

The web has lots of enthusiasts and great sites from around the world but the Mycological Society is just the group as there is lots of local variation in species. It's a great time of year to get out and hike around.

      Here's a fun blog:

      1. Also check out the NY Mycological Society as they do hikes in Northern NJ:

Another resource is the NY-NJ Trail conference which publishes hiking maps through the wooded areas of the state:
