Oyster festival [Oyster Bay, LI]

anyone going? I have never been so I don't know how good the festival is. Are there long lines for food? Nothing worse than waiting online with 2 small toddlers.

  1. when i was still living on long island i went a few times. yes, it gets very crowded. the food is usually good but it's tough for parking and you have to deal with lots of partiers. it can get a bit wacky.

    1. It's a pretty typical fair; most, maybe all, of the food vendors are basically fundraising by local organizations like the Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce, or the kid's soccer team, so you're not likely to get anything special. I.e., these aren't pro food trucks or restaurant chefs.

      Usually ridiculously jammed, so if you go, get there as early as possible to the start time. The food vendor lines vary quite a bit, so your wait depends on what you're looking for.

        If I do go, I only want fresh oysters...don't want some grandma's lasagna, not that there is anything wrong with it but I am not going to stay online to buy someone's mac and cheese. hehe

          Fresh oysters are surprisingly hard to find there... and it's from someone like the Rotary Club. I have no idea where they get them from/

              Uh, OYSTER Bay?

              Actually, some, if not all, come directly from the oyster beds in Oyster Bay owned by Flowers & Co. for more that 70 years. Fresh, briny and tasty.

            it's typical street fair food.

                Very amusing. Italian American Ladies Auxiliary and they are serving Greek food.

                Two out of 38 vendors have 1 oyster dish, and 1 vendor has them on the half shell.

                  I had a big change of plans this weekend and so we just returned from a day at the festival. 30 years of this festival and this is my first time. And I've lived on this island for much longer than that.
                  Oysters were available on the half shell at a vendor or two on the street and in the Food Court. Preshucked and stacked plastic plates, 5 for $10 with the liquor already discarded. I didn't have any and they did not look like Belon oysters. Someone had fried oyster po' boys for sale.

                Yet Newsday is reporting that they will "plow through" 40,000 oysters this weekend. I never heard of a shortage.

            2. Just providing a response in case you'd like to join us next year. We do in fact go through more than 40,000 oysters and were sold out by 3:30pm Sunday. There is one huge raw oyster booth that is staffed by members of the Oyster Bay Rotary. The oysters are purchased locally by Frank M. Flower & are the freshest ever...The only way a restaurant/chef/caterer can participate in the festival is if they support a local charity with much of the proceeds of the food sales of the event. Best option for transportation is the LIRR bc it literally drops you off in the festival. Here is a great overview: http://edition.pagesuite-professional...

                interesting and informative.
                40,000 oysters ! wow ! I guess there are more people than we thought that like oysters on the half shell shucked and rinsed in water. void of their flavorful liquor.
                that number could easily go up, considerably, if they looked even remotely appetizing. and were more a focal point of festival called "Oyster Festival", in a town called "Oyster Bay". but that number comprises mostly the cooked versions of oysters it seems.
                the only saving grace may be that this is for charity....

                  Except that the LIRR is pretty awful for getting around LI. I'd have to take the Babylon branch to Jamaica, then up to Oyster Bay--a two hour trip.

                  I found out one bad thing: seems that some of the locals resent the crowds during the festival. I'd gone there some years ago and parked in the nearest spot I could, on some side street about 1/2 mile from the festival. Got back and found that my car had been keyed, presumably by the guy whose house I'd parked in front of.

                    As a product of the south shore myself I can suggest what we always did...and my friends still do- drive to mineola or one of the other towns on the OB line and take the train in from there. Very easy.
