I'll be in Austin in April for four days on a BBQ tour.My question, however, concerns breakfast. When I lived in Austin a million years ago ('76 + '77),I used to love eating many fine breakfasts at various Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurants around town.So now all these years later I ask you,'Hounds:what are the must-do Mexican breakfast restaurants? Thanks in advance-and I'll write up a report when I get back home.Chow.

Sad to say, the greatest Mexican breakfast joint of all time, Montopolis Taco Inn, is long gone. Their No. 1 breakfast (huevos rancheros, carne de puerco guisada, papas, frijoles, and fresh made-in-house tortillas) opened up a whole new breakfast world for me. Nowadays I usually go to Amaya's Taco Village in Capital Plaza. It's pretty good. More than that I would not say. If you do go there, get the corn tortillas. They are exceptionally good.

no taco villiage (sorry...ech)...

If you're on the north side, I highly recommend Sabor on North Lamar. Closest thing to El Paso Mexican I've had since leaving home. They even have machacado...mmmm. Actually, I usually go for the c. pabil and the super taco (can't remember the name right now).

If you're on the south side, it's Polvo's all the way. Best breakfast dishes and truly the best fajitas I've ever had. Be sure and go inside for all the yummy salsas.

Give El Meson a try for a sit-down breakfast. You might be interested in sampling some breakfast tacos. Try Maria's (Taco X-press) on S. Lamar, Mi Madre's on Manor Rd, or Abarrotes in East Austin on Tillery. To get focused, a migas taco comparison would be fun.
