Mobile view... Tappable scroll buttons

Mr Taster Oct 13, 2013 09:10 PM

I've begged for this before and I think it's time again.

This is a major usability problem when composing long posts on mobile devices. I am using an LG Marquee with SwiftKey keyboard, but this has happened with other phones (LG Optimus and Swype) and with dolphin browser and boat browser, so it seems to be a site related problem.

Long posts that are larger than the window size can be tricky or impossible to edit.

Most recently, I composed a long post about pumpkin pies on the LA board. After posting, I saw some auto-correct errors so I went back to fix them by tapping the edit button.

This is where the problem is. I can scroll with a finger-flick to a certain point in the post, and then suddenly the site thinks I want to scroll the web page, not my windowed text.

Any effort to force the cursor down below this point (such as by tapping the SwiftKey cursor arrows, or by tapping the end of the bottom most line in the window, causes the window to freak out and automatically scroll me backwards to a point in the post that I don't need to edit. Alternatively, the page will freak out entirely and send me bouncing back to the top of the page, to the original post.

In a nutshell, the site seems to be confusing when I want to scroll my text window, and when I want to scroll the page.

It seems that a very easy workaround would be to implement scrolling arrows so that this frustrating thing no longer occurs. It's been driving me crazy for years, and I think it's about time for a real fix.

Thank you
Mr Taster

I don't know what the heck is going on these past few days but the mobile site is acting weirder than usual.

Right now, I am typing this blind. There is a keyboard on the bottom half of the screen, and black in the top half (see screenshot)

The way I got here was I tapped the text box to begin typing, and the site scrolled me SUPER far down the page, further than I've ever been able to scroll before into an area of black far below the published web page content.

Chowhound has never behaved this way before and it's driving me crazy.

With regard to the editing problem, I found this YouTube video which illustrates well what I am experiencing.

We're aware of the problem you're describing, and while we're working towards a fix, I unfortunately don't have an estimate of when that will happen.
        More on this here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/921044

If you're on an iPhone, ios7 seems to fix this bug.

If you're on an Android, try using Chrome as your browser, which may also fix these problems.

Unfortunately, Chrome doesn't work work on my version of android. V2.3.4

As for the video, other people are experiencing it. If you Google Android can't edit text browser you will see this is an issue across browsers and phones. Whole it's not uniquely a chowhound site P Robles, having something in the software indicating that the text in the window needs to scroll (as opposed to the web page scrolling) would be outrageously helpful. Since android confuses the two

          thanks

Ok, I can't post the link because when I long-tap the screen to paste, it sends me hurtling down to the black abyss. I'll try to post on another thread.

I should add that the combination of these two problems (typing blind and unable to edit posts) makes the mobile site nearly unusable for anything except reading (or posting on pcs)

One last detail. The taps are now wildly inaccurate. For example, when I tap on a thread bane, before the tap selection indicator (a little orange box) would highlight the topic name squarely. Now when I tap any link, the highlight box seems almost randomly placed. It does not highlight the topic selected but in fact appears to be randomly drawn, not indicating any particular block of text is highlighted

By the way, I downloaded a screen tap tester app to make sure it wasn't my screen going wonky, and it's not. My taps are being recorded accurately.

Please, please, please Chowhound. Fix this!

Perhaps this is an extension of the weird tapping problem but often taps to expand already read posts is unresponsive. I have had several instances where I have been locked out completely of being able to read old threads

I know that chowhounds are prone to hyperbole and resist change (I am guilty to if that too) but please know that I am hyperbole free when I say that my user experience is so terrible now that it is barely usable. I'm typing these to you now out of sheer stubbornness to not L et the glitches prevent me from expressing how terrible my mobile site experience is now... Virtually unusable

I'm having this problem, too. I can't tell you how many times I've been to the Roto Rooter site.

              2. Mr Taster Oct 25, 2013 09:02 PM

Testing now with Firefox browser (was and have been using Boat browser for over a year) and am no longer typing blind! Taps also now seem to be accurately registering.

Editing seems to be smoother too, but time will tell. I am still able to scroll down into the abyss, but am not being sent there against my will.

I will check the other functionality problems over time and let you know.....

None of the following would likely be an issue if you simply had a "full site" option. My phone's browser adapts most sites better than the developers' attempt to provide a special mobile version.

The site has been bad on Android for a while but it got unusable sometime in the last two or three weeks. All this behavior is new:

Text is huge and double-tapping won't zoom it out to the normal.

Tapping screen elements highlights random other regions and often brings up an ad instead of search or whatever.

Expand does not work, I was unable to look up a past report I'd made to see what I'd eaten before.
