Mid-Afternoon Cozy Restaurant near MSG

lovessushi Oct 13, 2013 01:47 PM

Need a mid-afternoon (perhaps 4:00) Saturday spot near MSG before an event. Looking for burgers/steak or traditional, high quality sushi. Looking for a cozy warm (even romantic?) atmosphere - nothing too noisy/cool/hip..just simple and delicious.

I'm familiar with the Chelsea area, but not at all with the area near MSG.

Ideally less than $80 for everything including tax/tip - not including alcohol.

Tough time of day (between brunch and dinner), and pretty bad neighborhood for what you're looking for (romantic, sushi, etc). Maybe the pub room at Keens (if it's open during that time, I can't tell from their site), or grab a seat at the Ace Hotel lobby and order a burger. Dunno if the Ace is too hip. Your options are going to be pretty limited in the MSG area. Unless K-town works?

Thanks for responding - all very good to know. Thinking about it - we could just eater later - maybe 5:30/6...but on a Saturday night not sure what that would look like in terms of reservations, etc. Any thoughts for outside the MSG area - walking distance, but we like to walk, so that's probably a pretty wide area? K-town could work I guess, but not quite what I was thinking.
I will look at the Ace though...
      Any additional thoughts greatly appreciated!

Don't know what your circumstances are for looking for good eats within MSG, but dammit this is Manhattan! Your $6 cab ride can get you to the better nabes for good foods!

The NoMad fireplace room is basically what you want but you won't be able to stay within your budget.

If you like whiskey, try the Flatiron Room, which has what you want atmosphere-wise but is more of a classy bar with food.

Expand on your budget and go for The NoMad (fireplace or parlour, not Atrium)

We could expand...the problem is, upon looking at the NoMad menu, I don't think it's quite what we're looking for. But thank you. Flatiron is more what we're looking for, but it's a bit far (just in terms of timing) and there's no prices on the menu online! (I know this is not a big deal to many, but would be helpful for us...)

True though, it's easy to get anywhere with a cab...

              Thanks all!

That's it? Any other ideas from fellow CH'ers? I am at a total loss for where to go as there are SO many options. I know it's a broad question, but any other help is much appreciated.

Sushi (simple, authentic) or steak/burger type restaurant
Somewhat near MSG but not in immediate area as apparently there isn't much there.
Intimate if possible - definitely not looking for hip/loud, etc. This will be a Saturday night which I know is a challenge for the above reason and for getting a reservation
Less than $80 for dinner for two not including alcohol

                Thanks again :)

Burgers, intimate, and reservations don't go together in my experience.

Great authentic sushi, intimate, and somewhat near MSG don't go together either.

                    How about Haru for sushi:

Thanks for that suggestion - Haru looks like it could be an option - do you have personal experience? I notice they have a location in times square and really want to avoid sushi that's gimmicky, etc.

                      Thank you!

Haru is pretty run of the mill.

Their sushi is fine, i have both dined there as well as had delivery at work often. Not what i would think of as special though

Not "intimate" but that time of day should be slow, in your budget, and can take a quick train the a/c/e to MSG, blue ribbon sushi at columbus circle:

Oh that looks like it might be great. Funny you suggested Blue Ribbon - a friend just mentioned how much she enjoyed a bite there some time ago. Thank you!

              Try the Breslin!

Just saw this - The Breslin looks perfect!! A bit further than I'd hoped for, but the atmosphere seems like what we're looking for and the menu is great!

                Thank you!

The Breslin is in the Ace Hotel (see my earlier post). It's very hip and not really intimate. It gets loud, which hopefully won't be an issue for you as you're dining early. They open for dinner at 5:30pm which is why I didn't think it would work for you. Similar menu to the lobby of the Ace. No reservations.

The Breslin is about a 7 minute walk from the Garden. Don't go to Haru, the sushi is below average

Window seat at Gaonnuri if you are willing to consider Korean fare. One block from MSG and you can take in a view of the city as dusk falls and lights come on.
